My nephew (ie my Sister) got me this pipe service set, and Santa (ie me) left this Former under the tree, the small tree out by the mailboxes to be exact.

Beautiful pipe! However, I have to ask about the service set…. I recognize the top six tools and their function…… but the lowest most tool in the photo… the one with what looks like metal jaws at the end….. what tool is that and how is it used to fix/help/mend a pipe? Just curious.

That one is an adjustable reamer tool. It expands and contracts to fit different bowls. You rotate it in the bowl, it it will gently remove the cake build up a little at a time (hopefully) without damaging the pipe's inner walls. If I have left anything out, and one of you sages wants to expand on my answer, please do so

@Epip Oc'Cabot On a new pipe, if you wipe the chamber out after smoking, with a paper towel/napkin, you’ll only build a 1mm layer of carbon, which is all you need, and you’ll never need a reamer.

If the carbon layer starts getting a little bumpy inside the chamber, after wiping it out, while it’s still warm, put a drop of water on a fingertip and gently rub it inside and you can make the carbon layer smooth/even.

Reamers are only needed if you don’t like to clean the chamber out after smoking, which is something you should do, or when buying an Estate pipe that has a thick cake in it.

That's the reamer I use 95% of the time.
