@Chasing Embers : Anything supplied to the troops in WW1 somehow got prefixed with the word 'trench' such as Trench Coat, Trench Watch, Trench Lighter probably since people spent so much time sitting in a water logged trench getting shot at by the enemy.

The Christmas 1914 Princess Mary tin came with a small pipe although I have never had one knowingly pass through my hands. Here is a picture of the whole assembly of Tin, Xmas card, Tobacco, Cigarettes, Pipe and Friction Lighter along with the box it came in. They are surprisingly still quite common in the U.K. I used one of the empty tins to carry my RYO tobacco and cigarette papers around in when I was about 16/17 only for it to be superseded by a Nut Brown tin!

So a short smoke break in a windy unsheltered break area is a special occasion you wish to celebrate with a pipe?
