If it’s an either/or choice then I’d be inclined to go with the pipes (less likely that they’ll still be available when you replenish the funds, possibly they're distinctly unique one-off pipes/grain etc) So unless it’s expected to be long term before you buy the other item then I’m thinking the tobacco will still be around next month but those specific pipes could be gone forever

"The only ways to avoid this is to prove that the new product is substantially equivalent to one on the market on 2/15/07, or to apply for an exemption for standard equivalence."

Maybe this is the loophole to avoid the nonsense.
or maybe the law isn't as bad as people think. I've seen so many times where something new is proposed and it's the gosh darn end of the world. Especially with the FDA cause they're not anywhere near as powerful as people think they are. They're beuracrates and those types tend to like dots dotted and crosses crossed more then anything else. Not saying anyone is wrong because who knows it can be that bad, but often times it really turns out it isn't any where near as bad as the predictions (however sometimes it is even worse so...). But currently the FDA is far more toothless then people think. The cheese world went through the same thing years ago, no one was gonna be able to buy any good cheese and well I actually have more cheese options then before. There is always some type of loophole. Oh and their already dealing with rules like this else where that seem significantly more stringent and costly to deal with (that's why there are less snuff scents.) so there is gonna be an effect but maybe not the world shattering stuff but maybe. Isn't it fun being a human and dealing with other humans? They're an erratic and confussing bunch.

That’s an interesting perspective. I sure hope you’re right!

At this point in time, the potential ban on all non-face-to-face tobacco sales is a greater concern than the FDA "deeming regulations" IMO.

I'm trying to stay with tobacco, and as moderately as I smoke, I don't go through much of it. I have plenty and plenty of pipes, and I really try to avoid buying more, except the one that just arrived in the mail. A little Christmas money, you know. Even just ordering two or three tins or bulk baggies or pouches at a time, I accumulate leaf. Kind folks send me samples. I really push to open some of the fabulous tins I already own. But yes, if you have the impelling itch, steer it toward tobacco. If pipe tobacco becomes difficult to purchase, I'm set for years. I'm still ordering a wee bit of blend every few months.

Do you enjoy watching art or being part of it? Some collect pipes as an art form, for the grain or for the shape and usually for both. I enjoy both the beauty of the pipe and the immersion via the smoke. There will always be something to smoke in it. If the pipe calls to you then go for it, but I wouldn't buy two pipes and no tobacco that seems just plain foolish!

It's true some blends won't be around forever and if you never had it then you won't miss it!

Like that good old Balkan sobranie or old Dunhill blends. If your young at this hobby, get what you can afford and enjoy it.

Balance is the key to happiness, I say buy a bit of both!

I'll echo the tobacco sentiments. If the naysayers are right, and I have a feeling they are, you'll be able to get high grade pipes for free being thrown out of the windows of moving cars on the highway by people who didn't buy enough tobacco before the pleasure nazi's shut us down. Then where will you be? Sitting by a stream stroking your new Peterson calling it "my precious"?
