Here's another Winslow Homer, called Thanksgiving Day. It's really strange, in his work, that with all those maritime paintings and the captains and fishermen, men sitting on slow, meandering rivers with a fishing line in, people sitting on front porches in the country, and not a single pipe. Yet, in most of his military works there is almost always a pipe. I'm sure that has some symbolism, though I'm not sure what.

Mikhail Soloviev – the Russian Civil War – 1936 - Almost every painting I see of Stalin includes the pipe, at least a much larger percentage than with photos.
