I can't believe what has happened to P&C.
It boggles my mind.
From all outward appearances, it does seem that CI bought it out in order to kill the competition, what else could explain it?
I don't know what kind of international traffic P&C did, but I gotta feeling the numbers were pretty good, it seems like a very stupid policy change.
It's like that Bugs Bunny cartoon when the gremlin keeps fuckin' with the airplane, it's built for speed but pull a few screws loose and it goes spiral diving into the ground.
The CI buyout of P&C has been like the Hindenburg disaster, an uglier than hell crash 'n burn.
I've continued to support P&C through all this muddy fumbling down in the trenches.
Just last night I bought a Wayne Teipen pipe, however, it's still showing as in stock, I can go put it in my basket all over again and proceed to check out, after I paid for it last night? Is there no auto-update with the inventory? Am I going to get an email saying "sorry, we don't have that pipe" ?
At the same time I threw in some Kendal Kentucky & Black House, I wanted to also try some Darbyshire as it sounds right up my alley --- it was showing as in stock, and as of right now says in stock, but when I put it in the basket I get the wonderful message of "Hearth & Home Marquee Series Darbyshire (2oz tin) is not orderable." --- this irks me no end, why waste my time with such a dupe? It's frustrating!
I've noticed that the pipe literature has also been dropped. I like reading. Smokingpipes.com rules in this category...except for Pipes&Tobaccos Magazine, inwhich Cup 'o Joes rules because they sell 'em for $4.95, I've done business with them before just because I wanted to get some back issues and threw some more stuff in.
Like everybody else, I've noticed the price increases and it is disappointing. P&C ruled on the tobacco front for sure, with the lower prices, quantity breaks and quick replenishment, but now it's like a graveyard over there, out-of-stock out the yinyang.
P&C, to me, always kinda had a "working class" vibe and I like that.
Especially nice as well is how y'all are carrying some of the lesser represented American artisan pipemakers, like Wayne Teipen, Jerry Crawford, Russ Cook, Old Nellie, Colin Rigsby, David S. Huber etc etc --- that goes a long way in my book and could be a strong suit for y'all if y'all did it up right, the photography is pretty good but it could be better. It could be a big draw if y'all build it up solid, all the dazzling Duesenberg astro-boy pipes are all well 'n good and attract a certain deep-pocket crowd, but as much as I'd love to have a Geiger Bodog, there ain't no way $1,497 can fall outta my skinny wallet, it's a daydream for a chump like me, but $200-$400 for a homegrown American pipe is something that I'll not only gladly splurge on, but it'll make me kinda proud to be keepin' it real on the block, so to say, zipcode 'n all that.
There's already been a collapse of massive proportions, overcoming that is going to be hard work and I'm sure all this crazy shit is super stressful, but it sounds like things are on the up 'n up, hopefully that mighty bird will take flight as I hope it does, rise the phoenix!
It's just deeply saddening to see how all this has gone down,
a great pity and a shame.
