Usually, I join forums for specific reasons. Then I start talking crap. But at least for some portion of that crap is on topic. When I'm with my friends, it's all about politics, religion and money. But talk about women folks take up good potion of that.

I seem to remember a statistic that claimed that at one point 25% of the adult male populous in the US smoked a pipe. At that point I imagine it was such a commonplace that it didn't tend to provoke much discussion. Just as there were people who drank only imported beers or whiskeys, there were a greater number who drank a Bud or Seagram's 7. Those folks had a different attitude towards their imbibing, just as some people smoked Prince Albert and others loaded up their briar with Three Nuns or State Express. I still have a bit of a problem when people refer to pipe smoking as a hobby. To me it was just something I enjoyed doing. I enjoy reading posts on the forum and belong to the Seattle pipe club so perhaps it has morphed into a hobby for me as we are less likely to meet a fellow pipe smoker casually and pass a quick, "what are you smoking".

I would think (just MY thoughts, not backed by facts or statistics) the vast majority of smokers - cigarettes, pipes, cigars - just smoke. Without too much thought on what, and the why of what they do.

The members on the Forums are here because pipes and tobacco are an interest (I daren't use the word "hobby") that we enjoy discussing and expanding our knowledge. We would represent less than 0.0001% of smokers.

I have a few wine loving friends and we tend to open some of our best bottles for one another because the visceral enjoyment is vastly enhanced (IMO) by the discussion of the wine in the glass before us.

But the vast majority of wine drinkers would laugh at what we do and call that "wine wankerism". ?

I’m the type that would get together with other pipe smokers but where the rule is “No Talking” much like the fictional Diogenes Club.
