I can't count the number of cigars I've "lost" when I've put them down to make a shot. If I was lucky, I'd find the gar when the course swung back again. And then there was the time I swore I saw someone smoking one of my lost gars...

I sit on the porch with my pipe and watch em go by from the 14th Green to the 15th tee. I can't see the hole on the green but I can see the first two tees, so I get to see some 'action'.

A clenched pipe is my pendulum for keeping my head down and swinging my head into the follow through.
I was taught the let the hips drag the shoulder through the swing. The shoulders turn the head. I do this for all swings. I've hit some 80 yard putts. One shouldn't dig a divot on the green I've been told.

MSO, I believe it was Samuel Clemens that termed golf the ruination of a good walk and I fully concur....

It was the novelist Harry Leon Wilson who used the quip in 1904 and published it in a novel called
  • The Boss Of Little Arcady
in 1905, by which time he had expanded the jape a little, so the published gag was:
“This new game of golf that the summer folks play seems to have too much walking for a good game and just enough game to spoil a good walk.”
