Tom, that's not a bad comparison. I understand those who see themselves as "true fountain pen connoisseurs" might look down on them. I'm cool with that.

I don't think anyone looks down on them. Certainly, their quality can't be disputed. Their pricing maybe, but just like Dunhill.
And just like a Dunhill, they can be found for much less than their stated value if one looks hard enough.
Very nice pens.

@pipemsmokingtom: "Mont Blanc. The Dunhill of fountain pens!"
Nice. As I brought Dunhill into this thread, I did not mean it as a knock, but as a reference to my not buying at the premium end of the spectrum. In this forum, the pejorative reference term might have been "Esoterica".
Nate, are your Mont Blancs -- in the image -- vintage instruments?

I don't know who's looking down on Mont Blanc, but they don't know anything for sure. My Mont Blanc is the most expensive and the best pen I have, although it has a very broad nib for my taste.
Edit: Many FP users collect only Mont Blancs.

@Nate: It looks like a great pen. They are called retractables I think. Does it have a button on the top to retract the nib, or is there some other mechanism?

I certainly didn't mean it as a knock either. I don't buy at the premium end of either pens or pipes. I think Dunhill is the more appropriate. Mont Blancs aren't scarce (a la Esoterica), but their market price is contentious just like Dunhill with the same sorts of "is it really worth it..." arguments.

Thanks guys! Glad to hear Montblancs are respected. The burgundy pen I received for my high school graduation in 1990. The silver Duo I've had since around '95 and the "retractable" (THANKS!) I've only had for a couple years. The action of screwing the cap onto the rear of the pen retracts the tip and removal... you get the point ;)

I don't know the model of your Mont Blancs, but I know some people who swear by Meisterstuck 146 or 149. They are MUCH expensive though.

The burgundy one is a 146. They are brilliant writing instruments. The Duo is lots more expensive than my 146. The retractable is Duo Boheme and falls in the middle.

@pipesmokingtom: You gave up? Good for you!
Edit: There's always tea, you know. It's a real gentleman's drink I think.

@fearsclave: If you're going to start using FPs, I recommend reading some reviews and starting with something good but inexpensive.
Edit: Just like a corn cob. ;)

Well.. "gave up" makes it sound like I was just sitting around one day and decided drinking was not good for me so I should stop. I promise, it was much more violent and troublesome than that ;)

I have a 146. I bought it back when I made WAY too much money. It's the only fountain pen I have and I truly love the way it writes.
But the Mont Blanc "precious resin" thing has always kind of pissed me off.
Or at least annoyed me.

@pipesmokingtom: I didn't think otherwise. It might still sometimes be hard for you. I know for sure, it's much harder than giving up cigarettes. Edit: Actually, cigarettes are a kids toy regarding this.
I've lost some people to drinking.
