if you're right handed, it's pretty hard to go wrong with a medium nib for writing "stuff". Enjoy. Also, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar :nana:

"Medium" varies quite a bit, but the nib you need mostly reflects your handwriting. For me, sometimes a medium is too fine (imagine reckless, barely literate, jagged script).

I definitely find that it's hard to make a fine line look good in a large script, but when you're actually trying to record information with any sort of density then the ultra fine tipping really shines.

I tend to go to either extreme, either grind the tip down to a needle like point, or splash ink on the page with a gushing large nib or 1mm stub.

Using a fountain pen exclusively will massively improve your handwriting. At first, it is a royal pain, but as time goes on, it becomes a joy.

I just recently got back into pipe smoking, granted I tried it when I was 18-20 and had no idea what I was doing. I started using fountain pens a little over a year ago, initially to do calligraphy and cartography but have moved onto carrying one with me everywhere. I have a couple of Noodlers and some disposable pilots that I encourage my children to use. I think it contributes to a "if you want to do something, do it well" ideal, using a fountain pen requires a bit more skill and actually helps slow down my writing and makes it more legible. I'm enjoying both pipe smoking and writing with fountain pens.

I just through cleaning 3 fountain pens, a MB 146, A Sheaffer Journaling pen and a Parker 75.
I used FP's in grammer school and then for calligraphy some years back but now have a flock of Pelikans among other vintage and new.
I like pipes, fountain pens and double barrel shotguns with 2 triggers. I like my iPhone, streaming movies and laptop. I like handmade Japanese damascus knives and laser carpentry levels. Single malts and craft beers. Manual wind watches
They're all good.
BTW, a great, inexpensive paper for FP's is Staples Sugarcane Paper, loose or journals. No bleed through or feathering with most inks.

To all interested-- the john neal site has all things concerning writing, Spencerian, illumination, calligraphy, etc. The second link is for high quality paper, lined and unlined, for fountain and dip pens. I use dip pens myself. As an aside, studies have shown faster recovery from brain trauma using pen or pencil to draw, write, etc. as compared to keyboard or mouse. Too, hand written notes, as in school/college, lead to better retention vs. written with a laptop.

I LOVE using fountain pens! I guess because I grew up using them at school daily...I'm not adverse to using bics or any other modern pen...but I just love the feeling of writing with fountain pens...the flow of ink and the look when I've written with my favourite pens...the ritual of refilling the cartridges from an old fashioned style ink well...the whole thing is just something that I enjoy a lot...
I'm English but working in Romania, and I found an awesome pen carver/maker who handmakes every pen, they come personalised with a serial no signifying when and who made it...the picture below is a stock image, when I have time I'll get a picture of the actual pen alongside my Irish Harp Peterson as both have a very similar finish which is why I bought them...the feeling of writing with that pen while I smoke a bowlful from a matching pipe...journalling/reflecting or making work notes...very relaxing!
