Normally I could justify 'pipesicle' as I'm up in Alberta. But we're not getting winter this year. I can't recall a warmer February. A neighbor recently celebrated his 40th and the garage was the 'smoking room'. When I saw a few others headed in that direction I grabbed a pipe and joined them. I was greeted with, "Oh, you're a pipe-man!" I guess that's OK! I've heard pipe-dude before, but 'dude' is one of those words that makes me want to punch someone. After the "Oh, you're a pipe-man!" I got a couple, "I can't believe how awesome that smells!"

Lemme see here, I suppose I actually prefer "pipeman". For one thing it sounds a bit British and another thing is how "pipesmoker" may carry many other (not so good) connotations in contemporary culture, i.e. "put down the crack pipe!". I don't much like "piper" because it sounds a bit tweeny or something, anyway a piper should only be at the gates of dawn circa 1967.
Here's a writer who uses both terms in a well-written essay:

It matters little what we call ourselves.

Where I live, the sight of a pipe smoker in public is very, very rare. Judging from commentary I have accumulated, the Pipe is considered somewhat of an anachronism. Any pet names we use here (pipeist, etc;) are localized to this small community. It's more likely that the entire world of non-smoker passers-by typecast us not pipe anything, but simply "old coot". For me, it's both accurate and welcome.......(big smile)
