they're great. They just can break if you look at them funny. I love them but I hate buying something that is so fragile. They smoke great and certain aromatics taste so crazy good in them.
None of the basic clay pipes I've bought have broken, though I only smoke them when seated.
Definitely not an outside pipe.

One can also buy a clay pipe with an ebonite stem [from the above website] that are more robust than the basic clay pipes. Clay pipes are rather good smokers.

I was tending towards larger bowls until...
On a whim recently in a B&M store a small Bulldog Estate caught my eye. For $17 I had to have it. I really didn't even look at the brand until I got home.
Turns out it is a Kaywoodie Super Grain
Bowl diameter is about 0.65"
I absolutely Love it and am now looking for another small pipe. I get about 20 minutes out of it, but I seem to be getting great flavor as well.
