So this list just covers some popular blends...I guess that's what you're looking for?

OTC: Carter Hall, Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic, Half & Half, Velvet

VaPer/Virginia: Escudo Navy De Luxe, Capstan Blue, Elizabethan Mixture

English: Early Morning Pipe, Nightcap, My Mixture 965, Plum Pudding, Presbyterian Mixture, Squadron Leader

Aromatic: Scottish Mixture, 1Q, Molto Dolce

Burley: (Besides OTC) Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz, HH Burley Flake, Aged Burley Flake

Of course there are many others.

Of all the responses, this is the one that resonates with me. I might add Lane Limited Ready Rubbed, Haddo's, and Erinmore to the "classics" list.

McClelland blends - they are the Led Zeppelin of pipe tobacco. Gone and often imitated without success.

Now my sort list of "rock star" tobacco blends:
Orlik Golden Slice
Rattrays Hal O The Wynd
Sam Gawith FVF
Esoterica Margate, Dunbar, and others to suit your taste

Orlik Golden Sliced
Peter Stokkebye 403 Luxury Bullseye flake and Luxury Navy Flake
STG Escudo Navy De Luxe

Mac Baren and Kohlhase&Kopp also have quite a lot of those hits.

Here is the worlds greatest list of pipe tobacco that everyone should cellar. I do take donations for all the hard work I put into it, 'The TR next to a name means no drying time needed, smoke it right from the tin. I like a little moisture in my flakes as they burn cooler and with more flavor.

What are the must-know/must-try tobaccos for beginners? Not personal favorites. Just the heavy hitters with which everyone should be familiar. I think it would be a good list to compile.

As an analogy, if someone had zero knowledge of Rock 'n' Roll and wanted to learn, you would give them Elvis, The Beatles and the Stones as a likely starting point rather than Moby Grape, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and The Monks. The hit list, not the deep cut favorites.

What are the age honored OTC, flake, cake, Virginia, English, etc.

For OTC I would think Capt. Black, but which one? Carter Hall, Virginia Gold?

I'm sure some of the Petersons/former Dunhills. Something from Orlik, Mac Baren, C&D, Stockebye?

Give me the radio hits, not the B-sides and rarities.
To me the basic must try’s That are easy to get might be:
English - my mixture 965
VaPer - escudo
Something different - Black Frigate
Cigar - billy budd blonde
Straight VA - Union Square
Burley - haunted bookshop
Something stronger - Irish Flake
Navy - Mac Baren Navy Flake
Aro - don’t know much about aros

Many good suggestions above. One iconic blend not yet mentioned is Granger, a Kentucky rough cut burley flavored with molasses. It has changed ownership and character over the decades of its century, and the long gone versions are invariably remembered as the best, but it is still a primary blend.

All this and not one mention of Balkan Supreme? Or did I miss it?

It's the Jailhouse Rock of its genre:

1. You don't have to like Elvis to recognize its iconic-ness.
2. It can be (and has been) covered by many others but it still has a certain je ne sais quoi.
3. It has and will continue to stand the test of time.
