Tonight is a story from my favorite horror short story author called The Wood of the Dead by Algernon Blackwood.

I like this author enough to have tracked down and purchased a 1 of 500 printed and signed copies of one of his stories. He doesn't do gory or anything like that but instead relies more on setting a scene and telling a tale which is one of the things I really admire about him. I'll be posting some more of his work here before Halloween.

Hope they don't do sequels like George Romero. We'd end up with "Morning Wood of the Dead".

Yeah, but that’s Celsius, so it’s like 87F. Fake temperatures shouldn’t count.

Hell it’s negative something or other Celsius here right now and I just got done shoveling the driveway for an hour and a half in shorts and flip flops. I guess it’s all relative...
0°C = water freezes, 100°C = water boils.

0°F = the temperature of a solution of ice, ammonium chloride, and water, 96°F = "sanguine hominis sani," the blood of a healthy man.

It isn't uncommon to see -40° here in the winter, which is where C and F overlap, the cold record here locally is -56°F.

Yeah, I’m just messing with you. I mean you guys don’t know how in the hell to measure anything, and your beer is trash, but you have great syrup and waterfowl hunting and most of you guys are pretty nice, so I’m gonna let the BS measurements slide.

I know you know what cold is. Most folks in America’s hat do. I’ve seen -84F before, and that was enough. The thing that gets me where I live is the wind. It never stops. I’ve seen -30F on my weather station at the house on a day with gusts over 70mph. I don’t have a wind chill chart in front of me, but let’s agree to call it miserable*(F/C).

You guys crack me up with the cold weather discussions!

Allow me to pontificate on the matter: Last night, while smoking and listening to the story, it was a frigid 284.82K here. So cold I had to wear a second sweater! nnnnnnnnnnnn

Starting with a short story tonight. It's a tale of two feuding men with an excellent twist ending.

Here's "The Interlopers" by Saki:

Well, Kentucky was made the 13th Confederate state on December 10, 1861, though they claimed neutrality, and it's cold as shit up here!☹

Now here's something a bit longer and from someplace definitely cold right now.

From Russian author Aleksey Tolstoy here's "The Family of the Vourdalak":

I take in 4000 calories/day to stay the way I am, no lack of eating here.

Notice I didn’t reference a lack of eating. My suggestion was to take in more. That means more than status quo. Go ahead and up that to about 6,000 and lets revisit this conversation in January. And throw some mayonnaise on them for good measure!

And if you’d stop hauling that tobacco cellar of yours out for photo ops so frequently... That’s gotta be a 3,000-4,000 calorie expenditure every time you tote it out and then put it back up...

Notice I didn't say I wasn't adding to it, only the requirement.? That's six full sized meals per day, but between I eat canned pasta or the like and snack cakes around the clock. Doctors have tried programs to put weight on me an have failed miserably.

I’ll PM you my mom’s address down in NC. If she can’t put weight on you it can’t be done.

Now, I’m not saying that weight won’t be 100% cholesterol, but dammit, it’s weight!
