Any fellow pipe smoking ruggers here? I'm currently coaching the team that I played for for a few years. Wanted to see if there was anyone else.

Played for my school and college but it was along time ago! I was a pipe smoker at the time though!

I didn't know that rugby was played in the US. Excellent game. Eton College in the UK have there own game which nobody else plays. It called the Eton Wall Game (or something along those lines). Nobody else understands the rules and I don't think anyone has scored (a goal, point, try???) in about 300 years.
My school's rugby coach (I went to a Welsh school where rugby is virtually law) impressed me by stopping a game mid ruck to emphasize how to use someone's back for grip when they had slipped face down in the mud.
In England schools of a certain age are either rugby schools or soccer schools. The rugby schools are pipe smokers. The soccer schools just don't know any better. The cricketers can't make up their minds but they definitely belong with the pipe smokers.

Rugby is definitely gaining popularity here in the states. Our national team isn't the best, but people are catching onto it.
I've loved he sport ever since I was introduced to it. And I love coaching young men about the game and making them fall in love with it as well.

I'm impressed!
Would have been nice if the US National team had beaten the All Blacks! It will only be a matter of time.
I hope rugby in the US doesn't go the same way that American Football did in the UK - it was incredibly popular for a few years but then died out. No doubt there are some teams still playing who will prove me wrong of course but I don't see them around as I once did.
I sincerely hope that the traditional rugby songs have been adopted in the US too!

Off topic I know, but one of my favourite competitions is the Royal Navy Field Gun Competition.

What connection does this have to pipes, I hear you say? My old boss, pipe mentor and naval officer, maintained that the gun race was the toughest competition in the world and that fingers, toes, eyes, ears and other extremities were regularly lost during the run. I think that the web-footed drunk was just trying to wind me up as I had an Army background but I always made a point of watching it at the Royal Tournament.

There are certainly still many rugby bar songs sung after matches. A must when having a beer with the teammates and opponents you had just thrashed around with.

Also, just watched the video you posted on the gun run. I had never heard or seen of this before. Fascinating to watch!

I think I actually posted the wrong video! The one I meant to post was Pompey: The Last Gun Run, as it goes into the origins of the competition during the Boer War and the relief of Ladysmith by the RN gun crews.

Played while at Montana State for The Deerslayers. At first match I was hit in lower back, flown home for surgery, and the End.

That was bad bloody luck Nate. In five years of playing rugby and seven years racing motorcycles I never sustain a serious injury. Guess I wasn't trying hard enough.

You're VERY lucky!! I used to ride bikes as well. I've shared this a few times, but here's the results of my Rugby career. I'm proud of them and amazed by medical tech. Be careful and take this photo as a word of caution ;)

Played hooker in medical school in the Augusta (GA) Mad Dogs (MD, get it?). We were a sorry bunch but loved the diversion and the camaraderie. Also the bawdy songs and beer afterwards (Eye, yi, yi yi, Rodriguez the Mexican pervert...). If my kids had been interested in either American football or rugby, I would have preferred rugby. In rugby the goal is NOT to kill the opponent...

Those are some impressive X-Rays Nate!
I played hooker as well up until I needed sinus surgery and reconstructive surgery. Now I'm coaching and living the dream. :D
