I am addicted to nicotine and caffeine, I am fine with these addictions. In fact, I deeply enjoy them. They make me a much more pleasant and interesting person to be around. I pity a person who would deprive themselves the joy of a double espresso and a hand rolled cigarette or a pipe, for anything other than spiritual reasons.
That said, I have tried to transition to a pipe as my primary nicotine delivery system several times, with greater degrees of luck. Unless you have somewhere you can constantly smoke; I doubt you will become addicted to a pipe.
I might be the wrong person to ask because I vape, smoke cigarettes, pipes, use snus, chew, dip, and occasionally enjoy nasal snuff; cycling through different things according to my good pleasure and what I want to that day.

I’m an infrequent (seasonal, outdoors) cigar smoker and a casual (0-3 bowls a week) pipe smoker. I’ve never felt the need for nicotine, and have gone months without smoking. Sometimes, at pipe club, I’ll have multiple bowls in one sitting. I’m addiction-prone, it’s a generations old familial/genetic thing, with alcoholism going back at least 250 years on my father’s side. My father taught pharmacy, and warned me about this, so I’m hyper aware. I see no problem with nicotine…for me. YMMV.

I have a nicotine addiction, but I would not say that I have a nicotine problem. end of story. your opinions on me matter not.

But, it's not my place to tell everyone else that they are an addict... unless their problem impedes on my problems.
100% life is too short to worry about what people think of me or what their problems may be. Treat me with respect and I'll do the same for you.

I'm still too new at this (3-4 months) and occasional (1-2 bowls a week, except pipe clubs!) to have a definitive answer, but what I notice so far is I think about smoking every day whether I do light up or not. But I do tend towards obsessive participation in odd subcultures (orchids, cocktails, tea, pipes, etc.) and I think that, perhaps like some others, It's hard to completely separate the psychological need (learn more, acquire more stuff, engage with the community) from the physical craving. Am I enjoying it so far? Hell yeah! Am I trying to maintain what I think is an acceptable level of risk? Also yes.

Hello Friends,

I am fairly new to smoking and have just bought my first pipe.

I think I am getting into it because I enjoy the reflective/spiritual element of smoking..

But am also wondering if I have not already developed a slight nicotine dependance and am just covering that up.. until now I have only smoked cigars occasionally but was convinced by a cigar store owner that pipe smoking is a similar thing and is overall more affordable and is natural/mostly orally inhaled etc..

I have no illusions about smoking being generally bad for your physical health but..

I guess what I am wondering is this:

How much is too much?

Would you recommend even starting smoking to your younger self? Is it possible to make this purely a casual thing? Once a day? A few times a week or month maybe? I am currently 30 years old.

I know addiction is person dependant, and I’ve seen many similar questions online on this topic, but I wanted to get some more support on this before I smoke more.. as well as more thoughts and insights..

I seriously do like it as a “me thing” and how it gets me outside and reflecting, slowing day amidst this busy world etc.. it also makes me feel connected to god or spirit, and our ancestors who have smoked for thousands of years and would hope to almost make this a form of spiritual practice/quiet reflection/me time.

I would warmly welcome your thoughts, and honest opinions, thank you all and happy smoking,

Paul.
I was a heavily addicted cigarette smoker decades ago. I used cigars to quit! For some reason I can pick up and put down pipes and cigars with zero issues.

I had a driving job for 15 years that gave me time and opportunity to smoke 3-5 bowls a day. After that, due to time constraints it’s been 2-3 bowls a week for the last 10 years. At times I’ll go a week or more with no opportunity to smoke.

Keep an eye on yourself, you will be fine!

Nicotine is good. It's available all over the place. It makes you look cool too.

Why not be addicted?

My genetic ancestry suggests that I descend from a 35,000 year long line of recreational drinkers. We made it this far with our bad habits. If we teleported Billy Sunday to preach temperance back to the stone age, would we have fared any better? Addictions are part of the human experience. Still, I think it's important to develop the discipline to keep our base impulses in check. I don't drink much anymore, but I do look forward to my morning blast of nicotine each day.

It drives me nuts when people say this. I smoke a 2-4 bowls a week usually and will drop it for weeks/months at a time when I'm not feeling like smoking for whatever reason. I've never been addicted to nicotine.
Agreed. I smoke 1-3 bowls per week. This past weekend I had 6 bowls because my family was out of town. Haven't had another yet this week and certainly I'm not fiening for one.
