I have been smoking pipe for last 3 months (switching from cigarettes or reduced use of it) , lately I have been having problem trying to sleep. I normally sleep late like 1-2 am, however lately I just couldn't fall asleep. Each night I feel like my brain is hyper active or super congested. I do sometime drink tea at night but never had problem with tea. Also I tried reading which helps last time. Lately, after switching the light off, the toss and turn starts, eventually when I sleep I still feel like my mind is not resting.
Question is...pipe tobacco do contain nicotine and would the contain or chemical contain is much higher than cigarettes? I m smoking Vauen aromatics ie. Shire/Rotwein and Peterson 2015 St Patrick day special.
Appreciate some help.

Yes, pipe tobacco does contain nicotine (some, more than others, depending on the blend) and even without inhaling as one does with cigarettes, you can get quite a nicotine dose from a pipe. I often smoke a pipe before turning in for the night and have not noticed any problems sleeping. But, nicotine is generally a stimulant (though, oddly, most of us find it relaxing) and can, in some people, cause restlessness.

If you've reduced the number of cigarettes you smoke, it might be nic withdrawal. I know when I stopped smoking the last time I had a bit of insomnia, with that feeling of a hyper - active mind. It cleared up within two weeks IIRC. Drinking massive quantities of water helped a lot, too.
I can't say for sure that's what's happening as people react differently, of course. Not sleeping sucks. Good luck!

I agree with stickframer its part of the withdraw process , your still smoking even though its a pipe your body is expecting the nic but not getting the same amount. it will pass.

In general, pipe smoking in moderation gives a lower dose of nicotine than cigarettes. Your sleep difficulties might be associated with pipe smoking, but not necessarily. There are ways to make fallling asleep easier that you might try -- quiet time before bed, no TV/radio/computer soon before bed, warm bath/shower. If things don't get better, try a pipe vacation. Then a sleep clinic. This doesn't sound like sleep apnea; that usually involves falling off to sleep abruptly from fatigue.

Nicotine is an odd substance - it acts both as a stimulant and as a depressant, depending on the dosage. I've read that smaller amounts produce the stimulant effect, while larger doses are more relaxing. If this is the case, then it's possible that you've reduced your intake to the point that it's having that stimulating effect and thus affecting your sleep. If you're intent on reducing your intake (i.e. not smoking cigs as much), it may just take your body a while to adjust to the new dose. Or you could try a higher nicotine pipe tobacco and see if that affects your sleep...

Aromatics tend to be lower in nicotine than many other blends. Do you inhale the pipe tobacco? How many pipes are you smoking? I would think unless you are inhaling the pipe, you would not be getting near the nicotine from the pipe than when you smoked cigarettes. Maybe it is nicotine withdrawal from cutting down/out the cigarettes.

I tried smoking cigarettes a littlr more than last few days. Hope it helps. I miss pipe so i smoke 2 bowls already. Pray that i get a good night sleep. Thks guys. I wwill report back soon.

I would make a small wager that it is the reduced nicotine that came with cutting back on cigarettes - not the pipe that is affecting your sleep. Of course, we're assuming it is nicotine related.

Pipe smoking is certainly a cause of sleep disorder for me. Sometimes, after enjoying a great tasting tobacco in one of my nice pipes, I can hardly get to sleep thinking about that next delicious bowlful that I plan on having when I get up the next morning. :wink:

I slept better last night after smoking about 10 sticks the entire day. About 3 after work.
Today, I will try and cut back to max 5 sticks to see if the nicotine withdrawal is back or not. Will report back tomorrow. Some of you reminded me the symptom of the cigarettes quitting withdrawal symptom, I tried quitting 10 yrs ago by going cold turkey. I can't eat, think and sleep, massive headache and jaw clamping.
Ok, let's see tonight.
Try to sleep with alcohol tonight. Few days ago I :roll: drank a lot but didn't sleep well too. :roll:

Old age causes sleep disorders and old farts smoke pipes. Well, you can see where I am going with this. :D

Smoking a bowl of Pease's Triple Play was the last thing I did before going to bed last night.

It was so good, I woke up about 4 hours later and just had to have another bowl right away!

So the answer is yes, pipe smoking causes sleep disorder.

Hi guys my headache is gone but back occasionally. I tried to sort of smoke cigarettes and pipes sparingly. I increased 1-3 sticks daily. Also tried higher nic type of pipe tobacco ie.Irish flakes, Erimore Mixture and Irish whiskey. Rough nic on throat need to mix with milder aromatics. Still trying...

Conversion to a pipe does change the rate of nicotine availability. I'd say it's a slight withdrawal. It shouldn't last too long. Relax. Stay with the pipe and eventually your body and brain will adjust to the difference.

I smoke very moderately. Once or twice a month. But at the pipe clubs meetings, I might try two or three blends. When I do this, I have a terrible time sleeping afterwards.
