Nicotine is very clever in the way that it sows deception in the smoker.
It's almost as though it has an intelligence all of its own.
I often ponder on the matter.

When I was 13 years old and a friend showed me a cigarette he had, I wanted to know all about out what was in there. I think I was addicted before I even took my first puff.

Oh well. time to light up another pipe, I just love that stuff.
Native Americans call tobacco Grandfather, one of many Teacher Plants, and they take it very seriously. I've done numerous native American Church ceremonies and tobacco is integral to all of them. It truly is sentient, in a metaphysical/archetypal way, and it will show you different ways of thought and protect you.

Even right now, I just came back from a friend's house, where there was definitely some serious mold. My lungs and sinuses were not happy after I left, but I know from experience that all I had to do was come home and light up a bowl, preferably with some cigar leaf, and it somehow cleanses the mold from my sinuses and lungs. I packed a bowl of Seersucker, even took 2 little inhales, plenty of retrohales, and I feel like there is not trace of mold now. I truly believe there is something to smudging. Time and again I am amazed by how well it works.

There is more to tobacco and it's overall frequency than meets the eye.

I'll go with a bit of "both" aspects as well. But I must admit that for the most part, the portrayals of those who smoke a pipe in general (in my memories) elicit the concept that a pipe smoker is somehow calmer, more controlled, and wiser than the average individual. Therefore, someone smoking a pipe just might be having grander thoughts than one who is not. Granted, many of those are fictitious, but not all. Sort of like how I had a similar association of wine drinkers being more likely to be credible philosophers than beer drinkers .... (Remember, these are self-stated perceptions, not judgements that I'm promoting)

Waitress asked me how I take my coffee. My reply? “Very seriously.”

Fact is, when bored.. grabbing a cup of coffee temporarily fills a void. I’m sitting in the garage enjoying a pipe. If not for the pipe, I’d be sitting in a garage

It’s a pass time. It’s a simple pleasure. As is reading and responding to this forum.

It’s no more hobby than the cup of coffee sitting beside me. I wonder if sitting in a garage is a thing? A hobby.

Just came back from a walk in the mist - barely able to make out cars in the distance - with a bowl of F&T Cut Blended Plug. Walking alone and smoking a pipe is both enjoyable, thoughtful and introspective, but it is the taste that matters the most for me, not bringing up any sort of mystique to it, or greybeard traditions, just delicious taste of good tobacco.

That's it! My garage was lonely and it knew if I could be intrigued by the pipe we would spend a lot more time together. I've gotten to know my garage so well since becoming a pipe smoker ...

I've just been reading up up on the native American church, which before your post I did not know existed
I'm glad that their outlook on spirituality confirms what I've long thought it may be.
I've always considered the native Americans to be honest, courageous, and dignified.

For me smoking is enjoyment and relaxation, the other attributes that have been mentioned such as contemplation meditation and so on come and go as they please during the time spent smoking. But for me it starts with pure enjoyment of the art of the pipe and quality tobacco

That's a crap definition. What is your source?

By that one, a stroll down a path is a hobby. I sure don't consider golf or tennis a hobby. Nor having sex for that matter.

The Oxford Dictionary of English reads plainly enough. I don’t understand the sensitivity on here surrounding the word, and I can’t find a single part of this definition that doesn’t fit perfectly with smoking a pipe. What gives?

For me, and I imagine for those of you who are like me and aren't considered very smart by family (which is weird, because I recently took an IQ test and scored an 82, which as we all recall from school, was a solid B-! I bet none of them got a B- on an IQ test.), I like that I can put a pipe in my mouth and I look even more introspective and thoughtful. And I can take it out of my mouth and use the mouthpiece as a pointer! So bonus!

I think the issue is Joe telling Ray-ray that he is engaged in a hobby when he lights up. Ray-ray don't play dat!

Seriously, it's a hobby for anyone who wants to view it that way for him, and it's not a hobby for those who don't.

For me smoking a pipe is kind of like sitting Zazen at times, meditative. It can also be a reflective time for me as well. And, it can be me just enjoying the tobacco I'm smoking and focusing on the flavors. So really a combination of those three things.
