I have to agree to that one james, lol. While I find them slightly interesting, I just don't care to own one.

We're all so different. I have admittedly the dullest pipe collection in the world (which I couldn't be happier with as well!). Nearly 40 pipes, just one bent, one 1/2 bent, one bulldog and the rest are billiards or billiardish enough to be considered in the billiard family. I find them to be the quintessential pipe and am utterly fascinated with them but I would also completely understand if most pipe enthusiasts fell sound asleep while viewing my pipes.
wait I like Oom Pauls and have several. besides Grabows and MM cobs, they are a style of pipe I buy right after Wellingtons of any size. hahaha.
I don't like straight... Even though I probably own 25, I don't like small bowls (any shape) or very large bowls...I don't have the time to smoke 8 oz of tobacco.

I like all pipes that I can smoke. Art pieces are nice to look at and admire. But I am with Uncle Arthur with this one - I collect to smoke and in my outfit - everybody gets a try. Rotation keeps the troops happy. Malcontent or trouble making pipes get the O file treatment with a clang!
I like the look of nearly all pipes. Straights are boring looking though. I would be afraid of breaking a very ornate pipe, but love to look at them. I would like to be able to afford one like the one pictured above. It would never leave my house if I had it.
Actually Peterson's Pipe of the Year this year this year is a panel billiard. I love the look and if I can afford it when it comes out later on this year I plan on getting it. Peterson is releasing it in a few different finishes. I believe it will be available in a smooth, rustic, sandblast, and ebony finish. They might have a red spray finish as well not quite sure.
I like some of those unique freehand ones. The carving just seems to give it its own personality. Freehands have grown on me over my short time pipe smoking. I now enjoy them as well as rhodesians and bulldogs. At first I was more into the 3/4 apple shape, but with time other shapes have become liked as well. Such as my zulu shaped 268 Peterson Aran. Love that shape.

I have a very eclectic mix of pipes.
A proper calabash for watching movies at home or working in my study, a large oom-paul for the patio, a few bents for driving, and plenty of billiards/straights for everything else.
That Michael Parks pipe, it is all one piece.
He is one amazing carver.
We both are regular attendees at meet and greet events managed by a local tobacconist.
His sandblasts are so dramatic you can almost cut your fingers on them.

He makes a lot more normal pipes that are absolutely destined for my smoking rack... as soon a my pocketbook can afford one.

I used to like the Zulu shape, but have grown not to care for it as much. Weird thing is I like Dublin's and bent Dublin's, just not when they are bent the wrong way.
Even though not a "shape", I use to really like giant pipes, but now have no desire for them whatsoever. I actually like smaller pipes much more now, and this is based on a purely aesthetic base and not how much I'm actually smoking.

While I am in the same school as haunted regarding billiards, my collection grows every time I see some pretty that captures my eye--lately it's been bulldogs / Rhodesians. Horns and most freehands don't appeal to me, though I have a Tim West freehand that is in my regular rotation. Medico Jet Streams are my non plus ultra, for some quirky reason--no matter what I've been smoking, I always return lovingly to their arms; they fall a tad outside of conventional shapes, but I consider them in the billiard family.
@hauntedmyst WOW! Yes, now that is a beautiful, artful pipe that, well, still looks like a pipe! Although the avant garde freehands are striking - I just don't get them!
But, what I really don't get are ladies pipes - or what is passed off as such. I don't want a smaller "man's" pipe; I have those. Please, give me some gentle, elegant curves with some color - pastels and brights - with some bling, even!

I don't get huge pipes. Any pipe bowl that's larger than my palm is out for me. I also like shorter stems that don't get in the way of reading or writing. Churchwardens look nice but too long. If it can't fit in my pocket it's to big.
Another one I don't get is the meers that are carved into animals or people. I have respect for the skill required to carve them but have no idea why one would want the bowl of their pipe in either form.
Or you just need bigger pockets. :P
I suspect that I'll always prefer pipes with graceful curved lines - bents, churchwardens, etc. - but I'm getting used to straight pipes thanks to my cobs. It's the one area where my normal "function over form" mindset breaks down - and I'm not sure why. Definitely something to cogitate on during my next break - which will involve my MM straight Legend... :D
