I have a retort I bought off eBay and rothnh is right. Please wear protective gear while using a reort. We're talking boiling alcohol. Boiling alcohol and skin are not a good combo. An even worse one would be boiling alcohol and eyeballs.

True PPE is a must . Leather gloves , goggles or face shield , small fire extinguisher isn't a bad idea either . I do it in my shop away from other flammables , I place a candle or buffet pan alcohol burner on a disposable oven pan , a bid and flat one .

I concur with proceeding with caution. I wrote about me scary lesson with one in this thread. I believe the torn plastic sleeve was the culprit but, nonetheless, its not something to enter into lightly :!:

plastic should be nonexistent between the test tube and stopper brother . and the more fancy one tries to be with this , the more room for error . I do not even like the larger round bottom boroscilicate graduated flasks as some others try to incorporate , too much alcohal to operate , volume is too great for a good pressure to shoot the alcohal through the stem . I work in a hospital and work in the lab for extra hours . We use bunsons , flasks , test tubes , and if caught without all necessary PPE , THERES NO WARNING , you are terminated and escorted off the property by police escort . The lab has been moved out of the main hospital due to some idiot burned up aprox. 100k in equipment . He had no PPE , no extinguisher , and did not have the thermometers and pressure meters assigned to the heated flasks and cylinders . He also left a gallon of medi alcohal wide open near a burner .

Interesting thread and this is all new to me. Never heard of this method to clean estate pipes. I'll pass on it though, sounds too hazardous for my liking. Good luck to you adventurous guys,
