Cedar is VERY soft and will not hold up to the heat of smoking. Further, the oils in cedar are not safe to inhale.
Some cedar can be toxic. Maple's fine though.?
Maple is great for pipemaking. ?? Most hard fruitwoods are good too, like cherry, apple, plum, pear, etc.
I've noticed that a lot of Eastern European pipes are listed as being made from Pear root.
Maple is commonly used and makes a good pipe, I hear. My home-state carver Jerry Perry has added that to his repertoire with Mountain Laurel, briar, and cocobolo (well that was a one-off). Cedar is highly aromatic, hence its use as a mothproofing, but for that reason isn't something you want to "breathe through."
Use a hard species of maple. Some species are as soft as cedar.
I wanted to use wood from my property to make it as "homemade" as possible ?
And hedge apples. That woody's great for pipes.
I have a pipe made by Skip Elliott out of Osage Orange. Smokes a bit hot but it's a good looking pipe and very well made.
I always wondered if Osage orange was good for pipes. We have plenty of those around. Funny thing, I had seen “Osage orange“ wood in bows and other things for the longest time, and wondered what an Osage orange tree was. Eventually I found out it’s a damn horse apple tree. I’ve seen them my whole life, but no one around here calls them Osage orange trees. It’s “horse apple trees“ or “Bois d’Arcs.”
Just don't mix up Horse Apples with Road Apples, which often used to come from the south end of horses, mules and oxen.
