In my limited experience, I haven't seen a correlation between performance and price of lighters. (Except for non-Bic and djeep disposables. Those are mostly garbage.)

Anyone swear by old boys? I know they require a little cleaning every now and then, but if I paid the 100 bucks for one, would I be happy?

jkrug that's true for sure but I am very careful and quick. I like how it fires up the whole surface without getting too hot on the tongue. I watched the franck method video and decided to try it and now I prefer to not have it any other way

In my experience anything with the piezo striker mechanism gives problems. At least buy a flint striker. I bought a Xicar Scribe which is pretty good. Fluid window, flint striker, easy to turn flame height knob and turns done as low as a hemp lighter. Only drawback is its not real windproof, but it is a classy lighter.
I'm very keen on the hemp lighter I made however.

I use a cheap made-in-China Jobon butane lighter, it cost me about 6 to 7 dollars. It's sold on Amazon for 12 dollars in the US.
