Broom the ones I ordered were a little different from the cases you show in your pics. But my problem was the stuff burns off faster than a match.
I use those long cigar matches from my B&M, they come in with the cigars I guess. Anyway I like them a lot. They can be re lit with your lighter if there is plenty left.
I know there are folks who see it differently and whatever works for you is great.
I have just screwed up one Sav too many using a lighter . If it is not windy I may use my butane soft flame for a second light. Outside in hard wind I go to cobs and a zipo and the same if I am on the water.

Get a Zippo thats made for pipes
It doesn't even need to be one of the ones "made for pipes". As long as it's the full size (not "Slimline") style, you can send it to Zippo and ask for a pipe insert. They will provide the insert, tune up the hinge, and send it back with the old insert (and a couple flints, just for good measure).

+1 on the Zippo - great price, works every time even in the wind. What's not to love?

Since price seems to be the most important factor, +1 on Zippo. If you can find any old Zippo with the traditional wind-proof flame, you could always purchase the pipe smoking insert and convert it. Another nice thing about Zippo's is the fuel is cheap and easy to find or have mail ordered.

Zippo, use matches or a Djeep inside but if you are outdoors the zippo with the pipe insert is unstoppable. It's also very inexpensive and very easy to maintain. I absolutely love mine.

Had an old Nimrod, but lost it. Bought it sometime back in the '60s. I'm through with buying expensive (in the $70-$100) range. I lose 'em or they won't work properly.
I find that when I am driving, I use the handy-dandy Bic. Just tilt yer pipe, and there you go.
At home on the deck, it's kitchen matches all the way. No problem and I love 'em.

Go to a flea market, garage sales, craigslist or ask around if anyone has a broken one as long as it's a full size Zippo. Send it to Zippo they will clean it up and fix whatever needs fixing. They will put in a pipe insert and send it back to you Iincluding the original insert.

I had to use one of those Bic candle lighters once. You know the ones with the flexible wand? Not classy. Kinda tacky. Sorta fun though! Bend it into a "U" shape (Inverted U, of course), pull the trigger and yer off!

Typically I just use a standard Bic. Of course this thread is probably going to change that for me. Thanks fellas!

I've used a Colibri soft flame butane pipe lighter for years. Just bought my first Zippo pipe lighter last weekend and WOW! I'll never go back. Sure there's a little taste especially immediately after the lighter is first lit, but the lighting process is so much easier and less frustrating - especially outside with any wind. Best $20 you'll spend.

I started using a torch lighter (cheap torch lighter) and prefer it to a normal flame. They can be had for a couple dollars and work very well

peterj...I wouldn't recommend those torch lighters as they can burn and scorch up a good pipe real fast. :puffy:

There are quite a few listed on ebay under 10 bucks. They are shipped from Hong Kong or China free. Buyer beware though

I bought a Xikar recently. It's a tad finicky.. Days 2 to 4 after a fill are pretty good, but the flame is inconsistent otherwise. Any kind of breeze, forget about it. The tamper is too small to be all that useful. It's pretty though.
Zippo I don't like because of refilling every day. Matches I don't like because they're messy and not outside friendly.
I'm one of those people always in search of a perfect lighting solution that I've yet to find.
If I had to pick anything over any other - Bic wins.

I can't for the life of me figure out how Bic disposable lighters are the only lighter than can produce a consistent flame for so long. Is it because it's not refillable and doesn't have the valve system?
Maybe I just haven't spent enough and need to spring for a really expensive pipe lighter. $50, I thought would have been enough...
I'm more frustrated about this than I realized.
