Mineral oil works quite well; no need to wait to get it.

All the above instructions are needed if you want a truly pristine stem, deep shiny black. For most of my pipes a simple rub down with mineral oil restores the stem finish that's smooth enough and black enough for my druthers.

(Then keep it out of bright light!)

^1+... I've got a 12 oz. bottle of food grade mineral oil I bought several years ago for $3.49 at the local pharm, it's like it last s forever...

As for cleaning it up, magic eraser as chasing embers has suggested, or toothpaste.

Toothpaste won't remove oxidation but it will give a stem a mirror finish.

12 ounces of Mineral Oil, at the rate I use it on many dozens of pipes, would last me 15-20 years....
