Right, so here is todays update. There is dust almost everywhere! It does take some time sanding. The stem is now sort of fit with the shank, but since the smoke channel wasn't drilled straight on the block, but slightly out of centre, the border is not perfect when seen from the top, but maybe this adds some charm to the pipe in the end. I was thinking to sand down the shank a bit more to get it slimmer.

Thank you Unclearthur. Maybe you could help me out with one thing. At what point should I add the stain to the wood? Is it when I have sanded it with the finest grit so the surface is entirely smooth, but before I have polished it with tripoli? Thanks for any advice!

Todays update. I think Im done now with the sanding, the next step should be staining and then polishing. I shaped the stem slightly like a saddle bit and did the shank a bit slimmer than before.

I start staining around the 220 grit . it shows up all the scratches that need to be sanded out by the next finer grit. As I use a buffer I don't sand past 400 because the first grit of compound is actually coarser than 400.

wow, that is some great work! I have been tempted to get a block and see what I can make out of it, but the only woodworking experience I have is whittling in boy scouts...
my only question is if you have developed PCD... pipe carving disorder?
