Well my understanding was that there was also a minimum of 75 posts required as a prerequisite. No worries, I'll be signing up soon after getting to that #. And based on what I've seen in other threads, my multiple comments and replies don't seem to be out of line in any manner and I'm currently having fun with the interactions.
Incorrect but as you please.

It's listed as rule #1
Or else be vouched for.
I don't know anyone so I'm going to fulfill rule #1 first.
LOL, last go on this.

You don't have to ask or know anyone, as I said just post and put your trust in the members.

If that's the real goal it's easy, if the goal is simply a reason for post count no worries, enjoy reaching that goal.

Thanks for your assistance. As I've stated multiple times, it's not just about reaching a # count, I'm having fun with new interactions and learning new things about the many nuances of this hobby. I really didn't doubt that a community such as this would prevent me from participating in a good program as long as they could vouch that I would follow through. I presumed from the beginning that I would be able to participate, but felt it would be at least appropriate for me to play along with the program as it was designed. Why a certain # of posts? Probably so that others could get a general sense about my character from the tone of my posts and interactions. I am enjoying that and feel that it is in good form for me to do so. I figured trying to fit in as best possible and asking for the least amount of special treatment might go a ways with those already here. I think I've got several days yet to sign up so I'm on that path. Thanks for ensuring me that I would be able to play. Cheers

i recently found a box of my grandfathers pipes. holy cake. the man just smoked the pipes until they were clogged/full of cake then just got a new one to smoke out of. no reaming, clearing, cleaning - just smoke till you cant and get a new one. luckily he spared me two of his finer pipes, a bent system sav and a slightly bent butz choquin dublin. rip gramps.

Based on looking at some Ebay pipes, he was not alone in that smoking style. Sheesh.

Times, they are a changin'. When I first started smoking, reading the forums back in those days, cake was in, big time, I was so excited to build cake in my pipe and it seemed to take forever! Nowadays, cake is just regular part of pipes smoking, just sneaks up on ya. I don't really have an opinion as far as cake or no cake is concerned. I like a thin cake in some pipes and in others I don't.

I'm also not picky when it comes to cake, pie or cobbler... I'll take em all! (not now though, I'm on a diet... this is the worst season to go on a diet, I know).

All of my pipes have a nice hard cake which is important for me to get the most out of my favorite blends. My pipes smoke cooler and have more flavor when I have a nice cake built up and I dedicate all of my pipes to either certain genres or for specific blends.

For example, I have three pipes dedicated to my stash of 2007 Stonehaven. I have 2 pipes dedicated to my 1998-2005 tins of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. I use my Rad Davis Zulu for my stash of 2012 Mac Baren Old Dark Fired. When I get a magical combination I run with it and it works for me. Some of my pipes have been dedicated for almost 10 years.

I was told by some old timers, a dimes worth of cake is all you want and it needs to be the nice hard stuff, not the flaky crap that breaks off. I break in every pipe I own with some type of Va, Vaper or Vabur flake. It builds the type of cake that I prefer.
I clean my bowl after smoking by doubling over a couple of pipe cleaners and wiping the inside of the bowl getting rid of any loose tobacco or ash. I also blow through the shank which gets even more crap out of the bowl. The cake builds up on it's own and a reaming every couple of years is all it takes to keep my cake where I want it.

If you aren't building cake you are robbing yourself of getting the most out of your tobacco. Just one man's opinion.

I maintain just a thin carbon layer, not cake as such. I scoop out the ash and wipe out the chamber with a abrasive paper towel. I don't need to own a reamer. This maintains the original diameter of the chamber. I don't begrudge anyone their cake, but this works for me and my pipes, some of which are forty some years old.

I use a paper towel and pipe cleaner based on advice from the usually good natured, helpful, and seasoned pipe users here.

I do think my pipe smoking enjoyment has improved over time, again, because of the good folks here. :)
Same! Cake seems like “next level” something to spend more time figuring out for this novice, and not saying it is, but not thinking about it keeps me uncluttered - only so much storage between my ears!

I'm still playing around with it. I might let a few "go" in that direction. It's all malleable at this point.

Opinions certainly vary regarding the regular maintenance of pipes. I clean the shank and stem with pipe cleaners every time I smoke and wipe the bowl with a twisted paper towel. With this method a thin layer of cake builds up and is maintained with minimal effort. That said, I really think the “right” method is what ever you prefer
I've started keeping some paper towel at my tobacco area, I like the limited abrasion. Seems about right. And I've started leaving a pipe cleaner inserted overnight after smoking a bowl.

I feel this way about cake.
I'm a pastry junky but never cared for cake of any form. Now pie. I can't come near pie. Every time I do little elves follow me and the dang thing just vanishes ?‍♂️
BTW, I love Paonia. Lived in CO for 15 years. Visited the highest elevation vineyard in N. America up top o' the hills there.
