Opinion only. Just sharing.

After spending a little time trying to get the whole "cake" thing going I think I've quit. I tend to prefer a nice, well cleaned chamber that I can tell is well dried and ready for it's next bowl of tobacco. I think of it more as a pie crust waiting to envelop my favorite filling so it can be baked to perfection.

Yes, I enjoy pie much more than cake.

Cheers
PS I'm also working on getting to 75 posts so that I can participate in the Secret Santa program, that sounds neat. So your (hopefully positive) comments will help me reply and reach that goal.

Yeh, despite how much I rinse and ream out my bowls after each smoke, cake still happens. It may not be as often as before, but it still happens and I still have to carve back that cake.
I like your analogy. I'm more of a peach cobbler fan, h aha.

Go post some on people tobacco reviews. Maybe that will help you reach your goal. "Yes, I love this," or "never tried it, but you make it sound good." Ha ha. We had a guy once come on here and made the same comment on every post. That pissed people off though, but some of us were rooting for him like watching a marathon in the Special Olympics, ha ha.

Yup, cake happens. I scrub my bowls with a pipe cleaner after every single smoke and as you can see, I have a small shellac buildup. I don't work for it, it just happens. When it gets more than 1/16th inch, I will scrape

I DO scrape off stuck tobacco bits from inside the bowl so as not to grow some wart-like things in there. ew. puffy

Opinions certainly vary regarding the regular maintenance of pipes. I clean the shank and stem with pipe cleaners every time I smoke and wipe the bowl with a twisted paper towel. With this method a thin layer of cake builds up and is maintained with minimal effort. That said, I really think the “right” method is what ever you prefer

I’m a pie lover as well, “punk-in-pie season is near .

Some here wash their pipes with water. I tried it with a beater pipe and now it’s twice as big. Just kidding ?

Thanks, I'll be doing the best I can to keep my comments genuine, if not superficially so. ;)

Rule #1 of the Santa thread is 75 posts by the posting of that thread. Unless I interpreted that wrong. Spamming posts to hit a goal isn’t the way to go about it.

Understood. But I think if you look closely you'll find that my comments are pertinent. I was only letting the community know of my oh, so noble effort of achieving the ability to participate in the holiday program that is graciously offered. There. :)

It's just that previously I was "trying" to get cake in there. Scraping any gunk loose and shaking with my thumb on top before dumping out dottle and debris. And I was having a bit of success with getting that little layer beginning on some of my pipes. But then it would develop unevenly and I simply found that cleaning it rather well seemed to provide a better bowl the next time for me. That's my story and I'm baking with it.

I initially was not cleaning my stem every time but have found the wisdom of making sure that pipe cleaner gets in there afterward. I even have a small roll top rack that closes shut and holds 7 and I've sort of made it my "medicine cabinet" of sorts. I place the pipe in there with a cleaner in the stem after the smoke and then look at it the next day or so to see if it needs any cleaning before it goes back to the shelf with it's dedicated tobacco, or back on the rotation rack. I'll try to get a pic of it sometime. Rather cute.

Ok, as far as pies go I make lots of pumpkin pies and cranberry pies coming up this time of year. Sometimes from scratch. Was great when I could use one of my own home grown pumpkins. But you might be surprised at how well even most of the "decorative" pumpkins can taste after they've provided a little scenic delight. But from scratch it's a multi-step process; easier from the can of course. On a more pertinent note, I have yet to wash a pipe with water, but I do have one that's on the smallish side .......
