Beautiful pipe! I nearly pulled the trigger on one a couple of weeks ago, but chickened out at the last minute. I would still like to pick one up while they are still readily available in various shapes.

Carolina, I've only smoked it with the vulcanite stem. I sits on my desk with the amber stem in it until I'm ready to smoke it. I'm a tad leary of breaking the amber stem.

Are they really that fragile? I can't imagine they could stand the test of being cut and shaped only to crumble once in the pipe, but I understand your hesitation. I have heard they are a little more fragile than other materials, but I'd hope so long as it didn't get dropped that it would hold up under normal smoking conditions.
If you do ever decide to giver a go, report back and let us know how it feels, smokes. I've never had one either and with the possibility of getting one on a new meer in the future, I'd love to know how well it works.

I have plenty of amber stemmed to report that amber isn't super fragile, but I give pipes rough duty. I'd smoke it, but the vulcanite does a great job and since it has two stems, the vulcanite will do the heavy lifting.

Good to know! Thanks! Hope she gives you plenty more years of good smokes! I'm now also waiting to see what transpires of the the news about Peterson and more hinged lid pipes...I think I need one of them. Either an 03 like yours or in an XL02, love both shapes!

That is one fine looking pipe. I don’t think I could ever bring myself to drop that much on one, but I’m glad you could and it smokes great, I’ll live vicariously through you! Cheers on that insane Pete.

I've been thinking about buying this one: https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/peterson/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=293096

I like the silver on the rim and the amber stem seems interesting. But... if I spend this money on a pipe, I have to use it. I'd really want to put that amber stem to work, just because that's the main reason I'd buy this pipe.
Just curious about the quality. The stain on this one is pretty dark. The grain doesn't look particularly interesting from the pictures. But, I do like the silver. Would be even better if it had great grain to match. Maybe it does, but from the pictures, it seems fairly ordinary.
So. How is yours smoking? A P-lip amber stem seems pretty cool. And no rim darkening! I'd hope for that price that they've got it all figured out and there aren't too many of those problems I've read about drilling, excessive fills, etc.
I think I'd like smoking a pipe with an amber stem. It's unusual, and it seems like it would be a nice experience. I only hesitate because in the pipe description, they talk about how fragile it is and give that as a reason for also having the acrylic stem. I'm pretty sure I'd want the amber stem to be the primary stem for me. If that's even possible without breaking it from regular use. What's the deal with this stuff?

I smoked the pipe with the amber stem in it today. It's just fine.
Lamp, the reason they probably make the comment about being fragile is an abundance of caution. The silver fittings do the heavy lifting, but I twisted the stem out right at the fittings as opposed to the end of middle of the stem. Leverage can be a two sided sword.
There are zero fills on this pipe. Nada. And it smokes like a dream. I'm extremely satisfied with the purchase and am probably going to get another amber/natural in a different shape....but I have to see the right one. I didn't see this pipe and pull the trigger. I looked at it for a day or two on a nice big computer screen. Then I pulled the trigger.

Glad to hear you could smoke it with the amber stem and not be too paranoid about it.
I've been eyeballing that pipe I linked to for a few days now. Sometimes, I think that's a sign I should leave it alone.
Do you know if any more of these are coming out to market? They make it seem like this is all there will be. I would like one with more interesting grain, because that's what I'm attracted to. However, the silver in this bulldog (a shape I don't have) is also somehow calling to me. Perhaps just not as much as a pipe with beautiful grain. I think I prefer to see beautiful briar over interesting silver work. In this case, it's close.
All being said, if I buy a pipe with an amber stem, I wouldn't treat the amber stem as a special occasion as they suggest in those listings. I'd want to see it every time I smoked the pipe. Otherwise, there's not much point in me buying one. I'd pay for a hunk of amber that sat on the shelf. Some people might buy it for the collector's appeal. That's fun too, but I would buy it for the amber stem and I'd definitely want to use that.
I'd just be hugely disappointed if it shattered with ordinary use. Maybe that's why they are so rare.
Nice pipe you have there.
