Curiously, mine has what appears to be a 2018 hallmark date stamp. 2020 would be a J, right? What was on your pipe?
My understanding of the hallmark stamps is that they have a lot of fittings that are pre-assayed and then basically get dumped in a lot from which they get pulled randomly. Unfortunately it’s not the best criteria for dating at times.

kinda plain really. My 2013 pipe of the year has a crazy looking Charles Peterson on the silver band.
Actually it looks like a mixture of "The Doc" from back to the future and Charles Peterson.

They were one and the same. Doc went back in the Delorean and created Peterson.
They didn't show that bit in the movies for some reason.

I think you're right. The date is of the silver not necessarily the pipe

This is largely true. The bands are semi-worked, then go to the assay office in large batches, then get fitted to pipes as they're needed in production. It's pretty unusual for a 2018 band to show up on a 2020 pipe (or a 2016 on a 2018, or whatever), so it's still a pretty good dating criterion. But it's not at all unusual for pipes to bear the hallmark from the previous year, particularly if the pipe was completed in the early part of the year (or, in the case of this year, the first half or so, given the factory was closed for three months).

So it's still a pretty good indication as long as perfect exactness of when a pipe is completed isn't a priority (and I sort of can't imagine when that level of exactness would be required for something like this).

As an interesting side tid-bit, the label on the box out of the factory now bears the JCID, which refers back to the electronic record for its manufacture, so when a given pipe was in a particular part of the factory can be tracked exact date, just not on the pipe itself.

Sorry, yes, I'm aware that Peterson has used out of sync hallmarks in the past.

In Mark Irwin's pre-release blog entry, his example had a 2019 stamp and he assumed that was because it was a prototype. He assumed release models would have have 2020 hallmarked bands. Emailing him today, he said I was "fortunate" to get an older band. I'm not exactly sure why (collect-ability, mismatched dates?)

I was curious about the ones you folks purchased, what were there dates?
