Yes, it looked good to the naked eye, polished, just not to what I like. A factory can't take that kind of time.
Got it; thanks! Is it noticeable in photos or by touch? I'm trying to learn how to identify it and one day address it as well.

Sounds like they masked it with wax.
No, not visible nor waxy. Just dulled by a little oxidation. And not unusual. If it didn't have any, that would have been surprising I always fine tune my Peterson stems, perhaps I didn't pay that close attention to the level in the past. I never had to return a stem, that's a first.

SmokingPipes sent my box back, and two tampers. I'm donating one to Mark Irwin, to have some fun with.

I did email SmokingPipes and Peterson, and basically said "your not getting favorable quality comments from the forums, can you up your game with the Peterson high grades?"

Interesting, I bought six from this run and all six are flawless.

But I also just scooped up two Ryan Alden’s someone was over picky about.

Sorry your experience hasn’t been great. My two are terrific and same for the two 9Bs, recent army mounts and spigots as well. Generally well received on here as well, IMO, but if I got a bad one I wouldn’t be pleased, either. I will say the classic decades old 999 I bought from you is the equal of any of them!

I really like the shape, but I'm always hesitant to buy new Peterson pipes because I had a couple that had some problems. Also my teeth can't fit a P-lip well for clenching. About a year and a half ago I bought a Peterson from 1906 that I can't find a shape number on but it looks basically the same but much smaller. Sadly the stem is defective so I might get a new one made one day.

That's a gorgeous pipe. What's the issue with the stem?

If you email Peterson in Ireland, they will sell you a new military fit stem, relatively inexpensive.
