+1 I what Doc said, I opened mine up with a drill bit , not for draw purposes it was for ease of getting a cleaner thru.

I've had a few p-lips in the last year and I don't mind them, but I certainly prefer a fishtail to it. The p-lip draws fine for me, but it is more of a pain to clean and it doesn't draw as well as the fishtail.

In my opinion the P-Lip is an affront to humanity. It is blasphemy to smoke one as the smoke hits the roof of your mouth where there are no taste buds. The draw as mentioned above is an abomination and I wouldn't be caught dead smoking one.
Yes I did buy one and yes I hated it. I gave the pipe to a cigar smoking friend of mine and even he hates it. There should be a law against the P-Lip and anyone caught smoking one should be made to do hard time in Leavenworth Penitentiary.

I have over 40 Petersons; a little over half are P-lips. I don't have a preference between Fishtail or P-lip. If given a choice I do go for the Fishtail, but P-lips are better for clenching, and some of the upper-echelon Petes only come in P-lip (I think), and I favor the upper-end Petes whenever I see one that interests me.
I tend to hold the pipes such that the smoke directly hits neither my tongue nor the roof of my mouth regardless of the type of mouthpiece (or perhaps it hits them both evenly?), so ... don't really notice a difference in smokeability, cleanability, flavor profiles, etc.

P-lips either love them or hate them. I offer a more middle ground.
Try the P-lip in more than one shape.
It is an acquired taste.
If you are a clincher it will save you from buying those rubber protectors that we buy to keep teeth marks from appearing on our stems.
If your smoking style is like mine you will bite through a few otherwise.
Most of my collection is comprised of pipes with fishtail bits but when I'm out and about I prefer a P-lip(less chance of if slipping from my jaw).
When I picked up the pipe 40+ years ago a friend of mine convinced to buy this sturdy Irish pipe with a funny looking bit. I took to it right away my habit of clenching the stem in my jaw + that large bulge that is the upper part of the P was a natural fit.
Never be afraid of trying something new.
If I had listened to my peers I never would have stuck with the pipe this long.

My version of hell would be nothing but P-Lip pipes in my collection.
I'm the guy with one P-lip in my stable, which I like, but I don't buy others. I have noticed that
both new and estate, these sometimes sell a little lower in price than fishtails, because they aren't
quite as popular and universal, so if you like P-lips just as well, I'd look for that price break.

I have a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Squire Bulldog which has a P lip and I really like it. I like the way it smokes as it keeps my tongue from getting burned. I've never had a problem with the roof of my mouth getting burned.

Pipestud, I need to return the Peterson's pipe I bought from you. I did not realize it has a vulcanite stem. For some reason my saliva on vulcanite stems makes them turn a nasty color. I smoked this pipe just a half dozen times or so and need to return it. How do we proceed and when will I get my money back?
Dear buyer - Sorry that your personal chemical makeup does not agree with vulcanite stems. I did note in the item description that the pipe you bought had a vulcanite P-lip stem. And, since you've already smoked the pipe I can't accept a return. I do thank you for your business.
Buyer - This pipe was already smoked so i don't see how having smoked it a few times would prevent you from taking this pipe back. Besides, I made it clear to you that I DON'T WANT THIS PIPE! A P-Lip is a stem leading to a reservoir under the bowl so that the owner can discreetly urinate into it if he finds himself somewhere with no toilet facilities. I thought everyone knew about the famous Peterson's P-Lip. Personally, that is why I've never purchased or puffed on a pre-smoked Peterson's pipe with a P-lip.
I never got a response back... or the pipe.

My first pipe purchased was a Peterson P-lip. It has been a love/hate kind of pipe in my rotation. Not sure if its a flaw in my technique or what, but I find I have to run a pipe cleaner through the stem about half way through smoking a bowl due to excessive moisture that builds up. The one P-lip I have happens to be one of my dedicated English blend pipes. I probably will not be adding another P-lip to my collection in the future. Others may love this design, but I'm not really crazy about them.
Two Petersons, two p-lips out of 80 pipes. P-lips are different. Not necessarily better or worse, but different. I appreciate having them in the stable along with meerschaum, cobs, freehands, artisans and clays. The majority of my pipes are traditional English makes, but sometimes I feel a little different and sometimes a p-lip is just the thing.
Despite cigrmaster's extreme bias against the p-lip bit, I have several and I love them. When I draw in I roll the smoke around my mouth and tongue to get the flavor, regardless of whether the pipe has a p-lip bit or not. I do generally enjoy cigrmaster's posts so I'll agree to disagree with him on this one. :mrgreen:
