I have owned one for 20 years and have never liked it. In my experience if your smoking to hot to get tongue bite your probably going to end up with a burnt roof of the mouth. @Chasing Embers told me how he sanded the end down to make it more like a fishtail. I plan on doing that as the pipe was one of my first pipes and I don’t want to get rid of it. A lot of people love them and they sell a lot. It’s all personal preference.

P-lips were a delight for me to discover. Been purchasing as many as possible. I'm now likely up to about 50 / 50 fishtail to P-lip.

Anyone else have this struggle with this type of stem. I have plenty of pipes and have smoked for decades. No problems with any other pipe but this is my first voyage with this type of stem…not liking it. Lol
I'm a hanger, not a clencher. I do like the Peterson's P-lip which is perfect for hanging and have a bunch by that maker with P-lips (they also make more conventional lips). But, I would think that the P-lip would make clenching uncomfortable if not impossible.

I think that what you call a hanger is what most of us call clenching the pipe correctly. I agree though about the p-lip it's the best clencher I have. If I ever go insane and take up jogging, the system pipe would certainly be my jogging pipe (great image).

I like my P-Lipped Petes. To me, they give a very comfortable smoke.
If anything, I feel P-Lip is less prone to collecting spit as the roof of the palate, against which the P-Lip opening rests, is probably the least spit-producing spot in my mouth.
Your Mileage May Vary :ROFLMAO:

Whenever I purchase a Peterson new or used I tend toward P-lips.
As a solid clencher I have learned over the years to appreciate the design. i never have to worry about a cracked button again( I have bitten through a few fishtails).
The way the bents hang in your jaw is perfection to me. :sher:

I love my P-Lips can't change, been smoking P-Lips since 1970, I do Fishtails some times but the best smoke is a P-Lip, some of my favourite pipes I block the end of my stem and drill a hole just in front of the ridge so it's just like a P-Lip, sorry if you don't agree but the best smoke and flavour goes to the top of your mouth. puffy

Yes, all my taste receptors are on the roof of my mouth too. 🥸

But really, I've had two - one bent (Sys Deluxe 11S) and one straight. I sold both within a couple smokes. Hated it.

I own a metric shit ton of PLips. I love them.

It’s why Baskin Robbins makes more than vanilla.
Bingo! AND, you have to learn and adapt our style to that button. Once you do, magic often happens.
That has been my experience, it was definitely an acquired skill.

Many p-lip haters buy low end, acrylic stemmed Petersons (the previous era was notorious for quality issues, compounding the issue). I learned the higher grades, with proper vulcanite stem material worked for me. I find a lot of the nay-sayers often don't have much experience and possibly punted too soon. (I was that guy, about 8 years ago)

You may often observe that when I comment on George Dibos awesome Peterson stem replacements, I say "looks great, except for that funny looking end". He prefers his own fishtale button. Weird, huh?

I don’t mind the P-lip at all. I have both and enjoy both. I have a handful of Petersons, all good smokers. Bought them early on so they weren’t informed decisions but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy either again.

When I first tried them, I didn't enjoy them. I didn't hate them, but I preferred fishtail stems. But when I tried a Deluxe Peterson, my mind changed. The higher-end Petes with P-lips have slightly larger buttons, and it makes a huge difference. They are also vulcanite as apposed to acrylic, though, for me at least, that isn't a big deal.

Nowadays, I like both P-lips and fishtails roughly equally. They do feel different at first, and an individual's dentition will always be a major variable at play, but if you clench them correctly they can in many ways feel more comfortable than a fishtail.

Strange how different people have different opinions 🤔
I prefer vulcanite plips but find some of the deluxe stems like tongue depressors, too wide for me.I find acrylic too hard and am prepared to accept the polishing needed on vulcanite
Not all deluxe stems are like this they seem to vary with what era they were made
