Perplexed with Time

Actually, my mind is blown by how many men admit that they let their wives make them smoke outside. There are things that shift in membership over the years. When I first joined the whole forum would have cracked up at someone saying that they "had" to smoke outside.

Ever had an argument with an Irish wife ? ?

You must live on another planet than I do? There is zero chance of being allowed to smoke anything in a Starbucks or any other restaurant or coffee house around here.

Alabama is pretty far out…. like, it’s always been about 20-30 years behind the rest of the world. Steakhouses still have ashtrays on the table in the smoking areas.
Of course I would never smoke inside a starbucks, but the tables outside. They have a sign, but it never hurts to ask, and in the South, no one likes to say “no.” …as ling as your not being a sick about it.

Smoking in general is declining, but there are ton of pipe and cigar smokers.

I have been amazed to read that some forum members smoke 6 or more bowls of leaf a day. I am recently retired and afforded much more free time than I had while working, but I cannot see myself having enough time to dedicate this much to my smoking passion. When do you guys squeeze in the nap?

I don't enjoy smoking while doing (most) other things well enough to be worth it. I've tried it a number of times, of course -- smoking while doing yard work or whatever -- and I've stopped bothering. Of course this means that I don't have time for more than one pipe a day. I now have a pipe most evenings while reading before bed.

Also, on these days I nap at 3pm, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt sleep, and the number of the clock shall be three. Four shalt thou not nap, neither nap thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then I nap.

People are too alienated from too many important things to realize how much they betray about shifting assumptions in their off-handed comments on public forums.
Every change we make creates outward moving ripples of unforeseen consequences. Just for example, in a free market, prices inflate within a generation to household incomes, so doubling incomes 70 years ago provided only a very short-term advantage. Now men are fiscal dependents, and shifts in fiscal economies tend towards shifts in relational economies. Both parties are less satisfied; neither party admits it.

I find that most restaurants or coffee houses, even Starbucks, when I ask if I may smoke my pipe tell me, "sure, the no smoking signs are just for cigarettes." So, I find that people love the smell of my smoke. I have absolutely never had anyone tell me likewise. And, I always find it interesting that so many smokers just assume that people don't like the smell of a pipe burning.

I've had mothers come up to me in the grocery store and ask if their kids could smell my pipe.

I can walk through the grocery store, get eggs in the back of the store, and pay for them with my pipe clenched the entire time, and the only thing anyone says to me is, “nice pipe!”

You have me strongly tempted to try this. But I suspect that my youth will work against me here. Your more venerable status may be aiding perceptions.

I quit the cigs a while back for health reasons. I enjoy the pipe but I'm trying not to go crazy with it. For some people, God Bless em:

I smoke any where from 4-6 bowls a day. All of my pipes are group 4-5 except for 2 group 6's. A group 4 -5 bowl with folded and stuffed flakes usually last me 1.5-2.00 hours. I get a nice cool and flavorful smoke with my system and it works nicely for me. I only smoke in my house, no one to answer too even when I was married I smoked inside as the ex smoke cigarettes and the occasional cigar.
I could never imagine being told where I can smoke.

I don't smoke 6 bowls a day, usually only 1 or 2 during the work week and 2 or 3 during the weekend. However, I could smoke 4 or 5 bowls every day just driving in my car to and from work and kids' activities.
