I’ve heard the burleys C&D use are typically uncased. I wonder if this causes people to think they’re underaged.
Respectfully, they are generally minimally cased, and seldom topped.

But I think your point is well-made. I am an unapologetic C&D devotee. I like their house style. Others may not, and draw erroneous conclusions from their preferences.

When I step outside the C&D portfolio to smoke something like Orlik Golden, Escudo, Hal, or even (gasp) Esoterica, I find the additives (including flake/coin binding agents that affect the burn if not more) quite obvious and apparent

I smoke mostly C&D so when I smoke other things they sometimes seem kind of heavy and extra. I don’t know if that makes sense

Logical fallacies within descriptions of a subjective experience? Say it isn't so!
I'm as shocked as you are

But seriously, if the claim is something like
"C&D tobaccos taste better with at least 2 and ideally 6 months of tin age. This is due to the way they are made, and because of what is not there (e.g., extensive casing, topping, binder). Even though no other houses intentionally tin age, C&D should because an overwhelming majority of smokers concur. Never mind that these factors define their house style. Also never mind that plenty of smokers think they taste fine fresh. We (whoever "we" are) know how C&D should conduct business, and so we say "too young" as a shorthand for all of the above"

well that would be something. Par for the (average level of dis) course I suppose

It makes perfect sense. @BenMN summed it up perfectly too. At least to me. You both did.

I had an awakening with how much I’d enjoyed a bowl of an inexpensive, bag tobacco; a simple Burley/Virginia mix. So much flavor with a gentle sweetness. Great tasting and here’s the key - simple.

So when a premium house like C&D offers up 3 of their stellar burleys, two of their Virginia’s and a pinch of their quality unsweetened black cavendish to create what I consider the Ultimate VaBur….

It’s hard to go back.

In other words, when I load a bowl of say, Carter Hall.. which I once loved…. I’m instantly aware of and put off by the artifice of its flavor.

Want a secret? Granger is still my favorite OTC. -But even it’s mild topping has me occasionally setting it aside and reaching for Pegasus.

I bounce between each depending on my mood. (Granger) with Sweet Tea or Savory (Pegasus) with Coffee.

As I write this? -Coffee with Cream and Pegasus in a cob. My dog is here too! Life is Good!

I just ordered 4oz of Pegasus, my first order thereof. Forum sponsor smokingpipes is running a 20% off C&D bulk sale, so I stocked up on some favorites (Yorktown, blending latakia and granulated perique) as well as some I've been meaning to try like Yale Mixture, Derringer, and Winchester. I'm looking forward to seeing what the fuss is all about with Pegasus et al.!

I notice you added no Granger. Glad. My affinity for Granger is a guilty pleasure akin to sipping Seagrams 7 Crown warm from its brown, plastic bottle. -another personal guilty favorite.

You may not “understand” Pegasus immediately. However, Winchester’s flavor won’t hide from you. Let us know how you get on with each.

I’ve changed opinions on Pegasus a few times. When I first tried it, in a cob, I really loved it: it was nutty, toasty, and sweet. I had numerous other tobaccos to try, though, so I jarred the Pegasus and left it alone for a while.

A few months later I tried it again, this time in a briar, and had to check whether it was even the same tobacco. This time it was bitter, harsh, and unpleasant. I chalk that up to poor technique on my part, I think.

After another few weeks away, I’m enjoying Pegasus again. It’s probably because I’m paying more attention to how it wants to be smoked. With the current sale price, I’m expecting to buy a pound or two to put away for the future.

At first Pegasus did not wow me. But man has it ever grown on me and now I can’t live without it. Going to stock up with the smokingpipes bulk sale as well.
Hutch, I paid $50 per pound in 2020. At only $34 per pound in 2024? This is making me question panic cellaring at all!

Glad to see it, honestly. Get it while the getting is good.. It ages quite well.

And for those of us whom make sound effects when getting out of a chair, it ages really FAST.

Played golf, unexpectedly today. So I left the house early and without a leisurely coffee and smoke. It’s now 4:00pm and I haven’t enjoyed a bowl yet today.

This one should be a really great smoke…

Pegasus Right. Winchester Left. Both aged 3 plus years….

The winner is…. PEGASUS
2 questions.

What's the pipe?

And what's it like to accidentally play golf?

The pipe is an unmarked basket I’ve had forever. If I had to guess, it could very well be a Savinelli 111….

Wife stayed home from work and said, “Why don’t you go play.” I phoned the course and grabbed the only tee time available to me.

And out door I went!

Ps. My golfing friends also consider my golf swing an accident.
