Peck, I think the choice of stain is VERY personal. But for what it's worth I think what works for the three pipes above, is how the stain choice plays off of the grain and each pipe's individual shape. For your pipe, I would like darker stain myself, it's an homage to the heritage your pipe is claiming.
As far as shank treatment goes, I am with Bradley and Michael, I'd go naked with just briar and ebonite. Nice choices to have partner. This one's going to be a stunner.

OK, just for argument's sake, here's a Bang with silver.

Did you miss the eye-popping grain? I didn't think so.

Thanks for posting the update, Peck. Looking good! I'm liking the stain choice very much.
Can't wait to see more of 'em.

The birdseye on that grain just pops. Absolutely stunning. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Both are absolutely beautiful - no silver band for me. I really prefer a pipe that I can see the grain in, but find the darker colors more rich looking. Was that too wishy-washy??? The display box is a thing of beauty also.

Just stunning! Both will turn out amazing, but I think the brandy is going to be my favorite.

Michael e-mailed me yesterday. My bent brandy and Majestic billiard are complete! Can't wait to journey out there to pick them up. Unfortunately that will have to wait until I am back from vacation a week from now.
Here they are:

An interesting development on this thread. The first piece of briar Michael started to carve into the Majestic billiard had, according to Michael, incredible ring grain and birdseye. Unfortunately, as Michael got into it, he discovered a sand pit or some other imperfection and told me that he wanted to start again on the smooth Majestic billiard. However, he indicated that he was just going to blast the one that he abandoned and thought it would blast beautifully. He said he would blast it and offer it to me first if I am interested, with the stain of my choice. Today he started the blasting and sent these pics.
