Thanks for the welcome Bulldog Mick! I am trying to learn more about the varieties of tobacco right now. What I can get locally is very limited but I might end up ordering online more now haha.

Actually I am wrong there is one cure for PAD. It is TAD. It is a lot cheaper as Bulldog Mick suggested. At the same time I like the hobby for the artistry of the pipes as well as enjoying the tobacco. The only cobs that are visually appealing to me is SmokinDragons. Those are a thing of beauty. Bulldog Mick you might want to check his out I think they are about 40 dollars. Still a lot higher than Missouri Meerschaums but cheaper than fancy briar.

@daytonsean
Of course haha I put a lot of money into that too but my fun money is what I am getting into with buying pipes... it just means I'll be going out less often this month haha and spend more time at home smoking a pipe.
@Bulldog Mick
Yes, I'm in canada... sad sad place for tobacco imo

@photoman: I don't mind the cheap cobs, especially because I'm still experimenting and figuring out what I actually like. That said, thanks for the suggestion!

It ain't easy mate. PAD is HORRID! I am semi-retired now, money is not a problem but............ I want every pipe I see. Same as baccy, I want em all. It is really hard not to "click" on estates (they are my favorite) But like someone else already said "do I really need another pipe, or more baccy". Well the answer is definitely no. It is hard to justify more pipes when I don't smoke all I have.

Yeah when trying to justify, that's where you can find some even ground to resist the PAD... sadly coming from CAD (Camera Acquiring Disease) PAD is very much less expensive for the things that I choose to buy. I will do my best to control myself and try more tobacco's first :D

I've been broke for a long time, so my compromise is one new pipe every month or other month. Also, I just make a wishlist of pipes and send them out to friends and family when they ask for present ideas.

What I do is set a limit on how much a month I am going to spend on pipes and tobacco and stick to it. Some months I buy more pipes, others more tobacco. I only use disposable income, and I always pay off the credit card at the end of the month. I do set limits as to how much I am willing to spend per pipe, after a certain price, I don't feel I am getting value for my money.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I can tell I'm going to have a wonderful and educational time at this forum. I think that since this is a new hobby I need to start setting a budget for myself. As for how much I'm willing to spend per pipe I guess only time will tell. At this point in my pipe smoking life I think the maximum I will pay is 150 and even if I win the lottery I don't think I'd be in the market to buy a pipe any more than that at this point. I need to learn to walk before I choose to run!

I set a bi-weekly budget and try to stick to it. If I want a more expensive pipe, I save some of my budget from the week before. I did save up over the summer and I finally found something to blow it on. It was a Brebbia Iceberg Canadian that I never would have been able to afford without a little savings.

Welcome! I usually control it by buying pipes until I'm out of money. That will stop me unless I have a credit card and a paycheck around the corner. Sometimes I ask my wife and she can usually think of several good reasons why I don't need another pipe. She's usually fine with me not asking and doing what I want, but If I do ask, it's always in my best interest to take her advice.
