Since 1989 I smoked exclusively only 2 pipes (i owned another few I never smoked because of their history)until 2012...Now I own more than 150 of them..I am trying to downsize but it is not easy...
Yeah I started a spreadsheet with my pipes and found there are only 5 that I would never want to get of. I am starting to formulate a plan on how to move the other ones.

Yep. I went from 1 pipe to 3 pipes to a spreadsheet as well. I can't tell how many I'd NEVER get rid of, so let's see.

<- This Peterson 314 was my first and only pipe for years and years when I only knew about BCA and 1Q. I'll die with it.

Both of my Savinelli 673's are special. I bought a set of matching Saint Nicholas's for all my pipe-smoking college friends at a bachelor party. I bought a pair of sandblasted Luisa Fiammatas for me and my brother, and that was his first pipe. So there's 3.

I've got a Peterson Sherlock and Mycroft from their Sherlock Holmes series. They're smooth-finished from a couple of years ago. The Mycroft was a consolation prize because the Sherlock was too expensive at the time, but then I turned around and bought the Sherlock anyway. Such is PAD. And as it turns out, the Mycroft smokes better. Now we're at 4 or 5.

My first really expensive pipe was my Vauen Auenland Almar because I wanted to channel Gandalf. I broke that pipe in at my grandfather's house and always think about him when I smoke it. So now it's 5 or 6.

I have a virgin Ser Jacopo Delecta L1 C that I'm going to break in on my 40th birthday here in a couple of months. The chamber isn't quite as big as @Chasing Embers meer, but it's double the chamber of most of my pipes and half-again as big as my "enormous" Sherlock. Let's call it 7.

So, I would have trouble getting rid of half of my pipes. Here's a family photo from earlier this year when I thought I had a lot.

If you’ve got the special sandblasted you should just move that smooth 614 along 😉😂

Yeah I realize the pipes I want to keep have to be exceptional smokers or extremely sentimental (and a least a decent smoker) but ideally both.

@Peterson314, how do you find your Vauen Auenland for smoking? My own collection is short by, among other things, a churchwarden. And those are definitely on my short list.

I was finally able to curb my PAD by getting a few racks. So now I have a mental barrier, I can't get more pipes than I can fit. Except for meerschaums with their own case. And cobs, which find their way all over the place. So now I'm looking at how to best pass along my basket briars and good-but-not-great smokers and replace them with... not more pipes, not better pipe (because it's hard to tell how it'll smoke before you try it). Name brand pipes? Pipes more suited to my tastes and style? Either way, I'm about ready to look at one by one swapping them out for ones I really want.

The biggest thing I've done to curb PAD is fully embracing TAD. I feel like buying a pipe? I spend the smoking budget on tobacco.

It's an excellent churchwarden. The first thing you'll notice about the Vauen Auenland is its quality. I had very high expectations for a $300 pipe, and it still blew me away. The details are fantastic, it has a nice heft and smokes wonderfully.

It's a perfect sitter. You can sit comfortably with your arm firmly planted on your armrest or knee and barely move your hand to get to your pipe. It adds an element of extra relaxation to the session.

It's particularly good at smoking blends that like to smoke hot--which I have serendipitously found applies to nearly all Country Squire blends. So my Middle Earth blends go with my LotR pipe. Go figure.

I do not feel the need to add another churchwarden to my collection. It fits one particular niche. But I'll say that my brother has smoked nearly every pipe I have, and his second pipe will probably be an Auenland.

Crazy how the prices on those went up. In 2015 they were $95 each.
I wonder why. IIRC Vauen used to have the official LotR line, but now it's gone to Shire Pipes, and they look cheesy and like they aren't meant to be smoked. And they're $50. So maybe Vauen had some price guarantee?

I found that I can order one from Italy for less than $200 to my door. Pipe market be weird sometimes.

North Georgia mountains.
I'm on a kick. I was slowly just starting my cellar every couple weeks. I don't really need the hoards I was buying before.
Then I found myself with 2 new pipes and a buddy that sells artisan estates. This has kicked off some serious PAD. Currently 2 sets in the works, with a 3rd in talks. It'll be slow, but it's begun. Not to mention all the trading I've been doing at my pipe club.
And I tell ya, my wife couldn't be happier. She gets a real kick out of these artisans works (she's an art collector). So she loves when i get a new pipe and then she finds the artisans page and looks at other works.
Yes, she enables me.

Can't wait to see what you've got in the works. Your taste has always appealed to me.

Does she an art collecting PAD counterpart?

So a long time ago I convinced my wife that cobs don't count towards the total collection. You can pick up 3/4 of their catalog for under $20 each. And look at them, sweetie. Look at the cobs and look at the briars I have, completely ignoring the meerschaums. A stem, bit, bowl, and draft holes, that's the only similarities honey. And because of the price they make much better fishing/shop/lawn mowing pipes. Almost disposable (according to her anyways).

So if resisting PAD becomes too much, toss in a nice MM cob to economically scratch that itch.
