Pack It To The Brim, Or Not?

Depends on how much tobacco I took out to dry. I try to go for little below the rim.

If you pack your pipe to the brim, it may rise up at first, but soon settles down into the bowl and slowly burns lower. But if you pack it a little less, it has room to rise up and you don't have to settle it as much with a tamper, maybe. What's your habit? I usually pack just below the brim, but it varies.

Actually, yeah, varies for me too. Mostly just how I feel at the time & what seems to work for the leaf.

I often use the frank method (or try to) which results in a flat surface of tobacco at the level of the rim. I’ve been trying to be more sparing and careful when applying the flame.

I swear blind I hadn't seen that when I said what I did!

Invariably, when I have time to smoke I eagerly pack the f***** FULL of tobacco. Then, inevitably, I have something come up and am unable to finish that bowl. I am constantly finishing off half smoked bowls before I can move on to the next smoke. lol

I pack however much I've dried. If it packs a little less then so be it...but typically it packs more so I have it to the brim 99% of the time.

Not. I pack to about 1/4" below the rim. Sometimes lower. I like my pipes, spent plenty of money on them, and treat them well so that they treat me well.

When I first started smoking a pipe, I stuffed it to the brim. Since my return pipemsmoking this past year, I noticed how charred some of the rims of my old piped were. Now, I tend to fill just below and am more conscious when lighting to avoid the dreaded rim charring.

I usually pack below the brim. I don't like a long smoke. I prefer short smokes and that equals to less tobacco in the bowl.

I try to keep it a little below the brim. I'm not very careful with my packing, nor with lighting, so not packing all the way helps me avoid spilling tobacco, flying embers and charring the rim.

I think a lot of folks don't know that the hottest part of the flame is at the tip. I see people pulling the whole flame onto the tobacco so that the tip has no where to go but to the side: scorch!!
