Some good pics and descriptions...Thanks.
The SD9VE fits my hand so well and points naturally unlike a Glock. Otherwise its no secret that S&W copied a great handgun and made it better ad well as more affordable....after many law suits and settlements.

Couldn't resist. I'll gladly cover the costs.
Carrying a firearm, day in and day out was a wearing responsibility. I have no fascination with them and very little interest in them, other than making sure that mine are dependable and the round heavy enough to do the job.

@Eightywon: Work with that young man. Center mass. Double tap.
@Woodsroad: Mother of God, a flare gun? Really, Dan?
On a somewhat serious note, our irascible, cantankerous and always disagreeable Woodsroad is a damned serious shooter of another sort.
Check this site out, folks: http://danzphoto.net/#
Shooter becomes artiste? Discuss.
Tough talking, smart ass Woodsroad is also one of the kindest gentlemen you'll ever "visit" with when you contact him on our back channel comm network. He's quick with a snappy comeback - some people are just like that - but there's been damned few people I've met here so willing to share.
Woodsroad, for all you newbs, really is one of the good guys... in spite of his posts.

Actually, yes. I collected them for a while and managed to accumulate a nice assortment of them. Ammo has become scarce, though, so I've started reloading, which in turn has led to interest in fireworks making. But that's where I drew the line. I've made black powder, but stuff like stars and flash powder are just too damned unpredictable for me. I ain't going there.

Now you've gone and blown my cover....

I'm primarily a bow hunter, but I do own a few rifles and one little handgun that I take with me on my Alaska hunting trips:

It's a S&W 460 revolver. I can shoot 45 colt, 454 casull and 460 S&W from this gun. It's pretty fun to watch people shoot this hand gun for the first time. I always have new shooters fire a progression of three shells (45, 454 and 460). The 45 is not bad at all. The 454 is pretty stout. The 460 is sort of like shooting a hand-held cannon.

I tell people not to go into bear country without two items; 1) another person slower than you are, 2) A small handgun with the front sight filed off. The first use of the gun is to wing your partner so as to slow them down, should they prove faster than you. The second use is, should your partner already be out of sight, is to insert the barrel of the weapon where it will do the most good (this is why the sight is filed, easier insertion with less pain) and blow your brains out before the bear is on you.

Death By Bear is not a joyride. Sometimes they'll take a swipe at you and that's that. But more often, they play with their food, and like to keep it somewhat alive. I've never come upon a hiker killed by a bear myself, but I've spoken with those who have. One was an outfitter in Ontario who found a couple that had been killed by a black bear. I talked with him a week after he found them. Evidently, the "run faster" defense didn't work for them. And possession of a firearm in that park is a felony.

We had a young man who took his grandmother on a morning jog in a city park. They surprised a brown bear on a moose calf. Granny was slower than grandson. The bear didn't eat her, just mauled her, and she bled out before assistance arrived. The park is only 10 minutes from downtown Anchorage.
Black bears scare me much more than a grizz. The brown seems to have some logic to their attacks, protection, surprise, etc. Old blackie? Sometimes they seem to want to play, other times they can be just malevolent. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to black bear thinking.
In all seriousness, I do not go into bear country without my 12guage and an extra pair of underpants. Three slugs followed by 6 00. I've dropped the safety twice in 50 years and never popped a round for self-defense.

I think the question he is asking himself is "Toy? Food?"
I consider myself to be "bear wise" when out and never have been able to bring myself to carry spray (aerosol taco sauce). I want something that I can depend on every time. My belief is that "bear spray" is "iffy." The same with pepper spray on a drugged up or enraged perp. If they take no notice of the pain the spray will not be effective. By the same token, bears are able to shrug off all sorts of hits until they bleed out, so the rounds need to be effectively placed. I shoot to "break down" the bear, shoulders first is my plan. They're fast and cover a great deal of territory with each bound. They are indeed a wonder. I hope my plan can be effectively implemented. My shoot/don't shoot line is pushed further out after each encounter.

I don't have a thing. No handguns, shotguns, big fixed-blade knives, or AR's. I certainly wouldn't have any fifteen or thirty-round magazines, either. Nope nope nope. Not me.
