i like burley--since a good bit of drugstore tobacco is burley, i smoke drug store tobacco--it's easier for me to procure than B & M or e-tail weed--i do mix and tweak at times with Latakia or non goopy cavendish just for variety--
there have been a few english blends in my cellar, but most of them have ended up in a leavins' jar--i now use that jar in extremely small quantities to tweak drug store blends for even more variety--i'm positive that there are few who would really enjoy my home made mixes--
i guess OTCs are what i was raised with and i have just continued to love the stuff--

I usually keep a pouch of the Prince or Carter Hall around. Both are straight-forward smokes and everytime I have a bowl of these old blends I can understand why they have remained so popular.

My favorite is Cap'n Black Royal followed by CB White. They are so delightfully smooth and aromatic I could smoke 'em all the time.

Lately, I've been smoking a lot of bulk blends, but there will always be room at my place for for my "drug-store" favorites.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention H&H. For some reason, I always like a bowl or two of that old-time baccy for a change of pace.

cornguy, if you like H&H give C&D's Gentleman Caller a try. It has deer tongue in the blend which is very reminiscent of the original H&H. A truly tasty blend.

Hey Max, I was just wondering what was it he said that made you decide you might not buy any more of Middletons tobaccos?

I like CB Gold and CB white alright. CH is also a solid one. I cut my gums on CB and I've actually grown to like Admirals Choice Vanilla pretty well. That's about all I have smoked in the OTC though.

I like to start the day with an OTC such as Carter Hall or Capt Black white pouch.

I gues youd call them my daily primer(s).

Do not be afraid to try OTC blends of tobacco. I am a young, fairly new pipe smoker and I happen to smoke blends such as: SWR, Carter Hall, PA, and Captain Black on a regular basis. They are perfect for when you are on the go and do not have much time,as well as being a regular in your smoking rotation. Plus they are rather inexpensive which is something that college students, such as myself grow to appreciate.

Fellows, I made one of the worst mistakes I have ever been proud I made. I bought a bag of Admiral's choice Cherry, and went right on and burned all the hide, hair, and feathers off my tongue, and lips. That stuff has been drying for a week now and is still gooey. However I also picked up a pouch of PA, CH, H&H, and SWR, and have learned why everyone says they can understand why these blends have been around so long and are still available. I think the SWR was too dry, but the other 3 I have learned to respect, all are good basic blends. I did also get some CB white and gold. I like the white a lot, the gold not so much, but PA and CH will be regulars no matter what else I happen to order.

I still get CBW which I consider an OTC blend but I get it online. I also bought a pound of peach OTC blend when I first started smoking for 12 dollars! It is surprisingly good but will ghost not only the pipe but the room you smoke it in and will make even my dryest cob gurgle. I still will smoke it every now and then when I want sweets more than a smoke lol

I'm not one to knock OTC. After all, I smoked H&H for 19 years straight! It was then that I finished my study of all I could read about blending and started to experiment. Were it not for Craig Tarler at C&D, I would still be smoking H&H. I had studied and I had experimented. But, I needed help to create what I was looking for and never could find. Craig Tarler liked my ideas of what I wanted to create and agreed it was unique. He agreed to help me. Well, the rest is history and you all know the story. The point is simple. I no longer can tolerate the OTC blends laden with PG to preserve shelf life. Simply put, there is nothing to compare to the tinner's of blends that avoid preservatives. I converted and won't go back to OTC. But, if you find an OTC that satifies you, continue with it. Those famous OTC blends have stood the test of time.

Yeah, as far as I know, Gambler is RYO mislabeled as pipe tobacco to evade taxes. Although, you could smoke it in a pipe. Probably taste like Bugler stuffed into a pipe, though.

I still order OTC's online...primarily Carter Hall and Captain Black. I also find that these OTC's online tend to be fresher than getting them from Walmart or somewhere like that; if you are having a problem with the OTC's, even though you started out on them, order them online and you might find a big difference like I did. That said, there are a ton of other OTC's out there that are considered by many to be very good smokes...e.g., Sir Walter Raleigh, Half and Half, etc. And I occasionally order these too, so don't be shy about trying out other "OTC's"; you have to remember something, especially if you are new to pipe smoking, these "codger blends" have been around for ever, and have not changed their recipes...they were successful decades ago, and are still successful even with internet access to other brands from overseas. People continue to smoke them for a reason...they are good solid tobaccos, nothing special, just good solid blends.
