So I been meaning to try deertongue and haven't yet, so I got 2oz of Crooner. I got 2 oz of Riverboat Gambler which is a Bob Runowski blend, I've really enjoyed his blends. And then I got 2oz of Pennington Gap, which is listed as Aromatic, and I'm not really an aromatic smoker but it sounded like it might be good. Anybody like any of these, or what do y'all think?

Lol Dang, ain't nobody got anything good to say about these 3? Now y'all got me worried. i figure ya gotta try things to see if ya like em, so we will see

If you don't like them (and I hope that you do), you just gift them to acquaintances who've expressed interest in trying pipe smoking or who've recently started experimenting with it, and you feel generous ;-)

Don't put too much stock in what others say about taste or flavor, you need to just smoke them for yourself. Don't get me wrong I really appreciate everyones opinions, but I put too much stock in what was said about certain tobaccos, especially Perique. I came to pipes via cigars and the only flavor profile I really didn't like was pepper. Had a few peppery cigars and did not enjoy them at all. So when I started smoking a pipe I did some research, pretty much everybody talked about the pepperiness of Perique, I avoided like the plague. As I continued my quest for that perfect blend, I smoked some blends with Perique and found that most of the blends that I prefer have Perique in them. I now love a Perique heavy blend, and that's because I don't get or taste pepper in any of these blends. I mostly get fruity or mildly musty.

That's the thing, partly... the same kind of tobacco can have wildly different tastes batch to batch or a different taste from manufacturer to manufacturer (depends how they further process it between casings and/or toppings, or if it's aged some first or even if it's put into a flake or cake as opposed to a ribbon cut), or even based on what else is in the blend.

There's generalities in flavor of different tobaccos... perique certainly can be peppery, but isn't necessarily peppery—perique can also be fruity (plummy). The opinions of others aren't worthless, but they aren't gospel either.

There's plenty of beloved blends that I absolutely hate... burley is by far the top dog for me and despite that, I hate the much-beloved Solani ABF, C&D Pegasus and Haunted Bookshop (OJK is awesome though and I love it). But... that's just me. However many people seem to be unable to differentiate between different kinds of "nutty" flavors, and they often can't tell much a difference between cocoa and chocolate flavor and can't tell a difference between anise/fennel and licorice (whereas for me and others, these are all distinctly different). Meanwhile, others can taste big differences in VAs and to me, they all mostly taste kind of the same (peppery or grassy/hay), while others think all burley just tastes like [non-descript] nutty and/or chocolate.

This is definitely something to bear in mind, along with everyone's tastes being different and that your own tastes can change.

Another good example is cilantro (or coriander leaves to those across the pond). To some, it tastes citrus-y while others think it tastes like soap. To me, when I was younger, cilantro did taste soapy, but over time my taste changed for me and now cilantro tastes citrus-y.

To the topic at hand, I have a tin of Crooner, the only blend I have with deertongue, but I haven't cracked it open yet. It may be the next one I open though when I'm ready to open another blend.

I'm surprised you don't like Pegasus or Haunted Bookshop but like Old Joe Krantz. Those are like my top 3, and then Bayou Morning. I got a can of Crooner on the way, so if ya pop yours let me know what ya think. Mine probably be here in a few days

To me, HB tastes like if you open a musty old book covered in mold in a bad way like if you wiped out the coffee pot with a mildewy sponge before making a new pot and you made the new pot with the wrong ratio and the coffee was bitter and burnt tasting because you accidentally grabbed a bag of garbage ass Starbucks, Pegasus tastes like literally nothing but just hot air. OJK tastes like sweet, floral-nutty woody.

Also a prime example of what I was talking about, as they're both (HB vs OJK) burley based blends created by Runowski of virginia, burley and perique if you just look at basic ingredients.

Everyone's always surprised by what I like and why and what I get out of stuff, because it's always different than their own experience.

Hey Sardonicus,

I know you prize understatement and subtle nuance, but I'm definitely getting a hint of perception that you don't actually like Pegasus? Let it all out, man, tell us how you really feel! :ROFLMAO:

I had bowls of lightly-aged Haunted Bookshop and Pegasus last evening, both blends that I did not like at all when I first tried them fresh from the shipment. They've been sitting in jars for six-eight months now, and I thought both were much better this time around. I actually kind of enjoyed the HB (which was actually from 2022, so older than I thought), I got cocoa and black pepper notes in the smoke and a bit of tingle in the back of my throat (which might be residual from the sinus infection I had earlier this week). The Pegasus was a little less interesting than the HB, but it was more than just hot air this time around. I'll revisit them again.

There's no doubt that our tastes and preferences do change. I'm liking burley-forward blends a lot more now than I did this time last year. I'd still rather smoke an English, VaPer, or DFK-forward blend, but I won't shy away from a burley anymore.

Deertounge is a hard no for me. Pennington Gap I’ve smoked a few times and not sure if it will be a repeat purchase. Riverboat Gambler is kind of in between Old Joe and Haunted Bookshop but has Oriental. I like it so far. Enjoy your explorations.

Funny thing (or fate/karma/whatever) I just had a sample of Pegasus arrive yesterday, so after writing my earlier post, I decided to fire some up in the Connoisseur and see for myself . . . . and in less than five minutes, I found myself agreeing with Sardonicus.

I get why people like it; it's a straightforward, unflavored burley/Va blend. But while I don't want to consign it to a fiery pit in hell, it's not for me -- it tastes dry, I don't get much flavor, it lacks the complexity and balance that I find in my favorite blends. I may keep it to see what some aging does, or trade it away.

OTOH, I do like HB and OJK for their stronger perique notes, and I'm still deciding which one to get more of, but I'm leaning towards OJK. Still trying to listen and learn from others with more experience, without ignoring my own tastes because some people taste differently!

Yeah I guess so. I don't share your feelings on them blends at all. Pegasus is kinda boring but flavorful and satisfying all the same. HB I can understand a little criticism and cause it's got a rough character to it that I can see why someone wouldn't like it. My Dad for example doesn't care for HB. Or at least he didn't, he says it's growing on him. But the OJK and OJK Blue ( the only two I've had) are solid blends. I don't know though, I'm a huge fan of C&D.

Can't speak for any of the three, but I do like the occasional deertounge blend. New Market and Gentleman Caller are the two I turn to, to scratch that itch.
