So I been meaning to try deertongue and haven't yet, so I got 2oz of Crooner. I got 2 oz of Riverboat Gambler which is a Bob Runowski blend, I've really enjoyed his blends. And then I got 2oz of Pennington Gap, which is listed as Aromatic, and I'm not really an aromatic smoker but it sounded like it might be good. Anybody like any of these, or what do y'all think?
Help me here.
You are not really an aromatic smoker but you order three different aromatic blends to try? Is it just the idea of trying deer tongue?
I am about 50/50 on aromatic and non-aromatic blends. What I smoke depends on where I'm at and who I am going to be around.
I have smoked a couple of tins of Crooner and Gentleman Caller both of which contains deer tongue. The original London Dock also contained deer tongue but the London Dock made by Daughters & Ryan used a courmarin extract and not deer tongue itself.

I have both Crooner and Gentleman Caller on my to buy list but don't know when I will get around to buying any.

Well the Aros I've had, have been overwhelmingly flavored, goopy and wet, I usually end up taking them and mixing them with straight Burley or Virginia to tone them down a bit. Real reason I'm ordering these Aromatics besides simply to try them, is that I'm looking for blends for my Dad. He didn't really care for the HB I sent him, he's looking for what he remembers his granddad and uncles smoking back in the 60s. I want to find something he will enjoy before he gives up on pipe smoking. He thought HB tasted like Cigarettes. I told him to smoke slower and try to keep it cool, and enjoy the taste. He said he wanted something sweeter and that smelled really good. Well that's Aros. So I figure I'll try a few and if there good I'll send him some tins.

The only deer tongue blend I've tried is Gentleman Caller.
I thought it smelled good, but the flavor didn't deliver for me. It tasted too much like an artificial sweetener.. very odd.

It also ghosted the hell out of a pipe.
I've heard that deertongue will ghost a pipe. I've got a pipe ready to dedicate to ghosting blends like Aros. I don't really smoke stuff like this and I don't really smoke that pipe a lot, so it'll be cool.

He wants old school American “codger” blends.

Half and Half
Prince Albert
Carter Hall
Captain Black
Edgeworth Ready Rubbed

There are many others but I’m spacing on the names.
There are small blenders that make modern day and maybe elevated versions of these. Watch City Cigar and Milan Tobacconist come to mind. Sutliff used to make a great Ready Rubbed match.
Milan makes a great Carter Hall match and Watch City has American Cut Plug and #7.

So I'm about half way through a bowl of Pennington Gap. It's got a familiar flavor to it. I like Barbary Coast, Haddo's Delight, and Windjammer, they all have a drop of booze to em. And with tobaccos that I like in them. This Pennington Gap has a real nice aroma to it. It smells good to me. Taste really good. I like it. I'm sure it'll only get better as the days go on. It's kinda spicy, the booze isn't overwhelming, and it's Burley forward. Right up my alley. im gonna smoke some Crooner in a bit, and then I'm gonna smoke that Riverboat Gambler in the morning with some coffee.

Personally, I enjoy Crooner a lot. It’s light, sweet, hint of vanilla, mild nuttiness from the burley. It works. But yeah, don’t let the thoughts of others keep you from trying something you might like. You never know until you try it yourself.
I was curious about deertongue, but put off by the burley base in Crooner, so I got some Engine #382, which adds Va, Cavendish, and Perique to the mix, I find it to be a nice summer smoke.

So I just smoke a bowl of the Crooner. Its okay I guess. It's just a real subtle kind of smoke. It's an easy smoke. Flavor of it just wasn't very good. But sometimes stuff grows on me after I get through an Oz of it or so. I'm still interested in GC and E382. As far as the third blend I ordered Riverboat Gambler, I'm gonna save it for in the morning. So I'll let ya know about it tomorrow. If I smoke anymore today it'll be good ol Haunted Bookshop. In fact I'm craving a bowl of it right now.

You heard right. I have to be in the mood for it, but deertongue can be very enjoyable. It has a very pleasant room note, so it is nice to bust out if I have guests over and I am wanting a smoke that won't offend anyone.
I never tried Crooner or Pennington Gap, but Riverboat Gambler is a solid smoke. Sweet with a little spice, but fairly mild overall. A good summer smoke. It's not my favorite Runowski blend, but it's still worth trying.

What is your favorite Runowski blend? I haven't tried all of them let, but I've enjoyed them all so far

For some reason this thread inspired me to open a 5 year old jar of Blockade Runner. I absolutely hated it and jarred it when i first tried it. I just finished a small bowl in a Peterson 313 system standard and it was okay. I'll have a few more smokes and see how it goes.

i think the next 3 I'll try will be Blockade Runner, Sunday Picnic, and Engine #382

Sunday Picnic is decent.

Glad you're digging the Riverboat Gambler. Always fun to explore new things.

Years ago i picked up a couple ounces of bulk deer tongue to add to an occasional home blend for a change of pace. It's definitely a strong, unique herb. I recently had my brother in WV fwd some tobacco that i couldn't get shipped direct (due to WA state laws) and am currently making a deer tongue blend for him to accompany several others in a "thank you" care package for his trouble.

Love it or hate i: only one way to find out...cheers and good luck with the sampling.
