I'm part of a couple of other forums -- one fly fishing related and one traditional archery related.
The fly fishing one is woefully unhelpful. I've run into more guys offering to help me out with fly fishing on the trad archery forum than on the fly fishing forum. Go figure.
The trad archery forum has been very friendly in my experience -- the guys clearly know each other after years of use, and meeting each other at archery rendezvous, and they often do giveaways on the forum (I've received both a hat and a book through these giveaways).
BUT what holds that forum back is its abysmal technology. No profile pics, no bio information, no ability to "like" a post, no ability to respond directly to a post (only to the thread in general), and the PM system does not consolidate a conversation together, and deletes it after 30 days.
I think that a more social media-esque platform like this is part of what makes this a success.
