Opening An Irreplaceable Tin

Every day above the ground is a good day. I have seen so many people on this forum cellaring for many years and not being able to smoke later because of health issues. Then they start selling their tobacco, or they die and we don't even know where their tobacco went. I live outside the States and it is very difficult to buy some tobacco and get it delivered to where I live at the moment and it is almost impossible to find a good pipe tobacco here. Even taking all of these into account I smoke like there is no tomorrow.

No. I don't mean BTL - those are easy to find these days. I'm talking about stuff like this:

Man, it is a conundrum. I popper a tin of 40 year old Cope's Escudo and damn near had an orgasm when I smoked it. It was above and away the finest tobacco I've ever smoked. And now .... it's gone.

Everything in my cellar is on the block to be smoked except for my last tin of the Original Three Nuns. Everything else in my cellar is available to be smoked. I am holding out on the Three Nuns for a special occasion to be smoked with a good pipe buddy who has never tried it before. It may get smoked sooner than later as one of my best pipe buddies is moving to Florida and I will probably crack it when he moves into town.

Same here. Just smoke the stuff. I have opened 20 year old tins or bags and they are amazing. No time like the present. Why smoke all your new shit now and let the older/irreplaceable shit just sit there?
What if in 5 more years the tin or bag fails ? Then you’ll wish you smoked it at 20 years of age vs 25.

Yup, every day above ground is a celebration. My mother died at 58 from brain cancer. Five weeks later my 59 year old father died of a heart attack. Open the tin now and enjoy every moment.

depends on what you did to win her. Personally mine is a participation trophy so I just hide her in the shed.

I'm not sure I wholly embrace this application of the carpe diem philosophy. It sounds good, but the reality is most of us have many days, if not years or even decades ahead of us. I have no desire to burn through my assets (metaphorically or literally) before I die. Some now, some later is more my speed. But then diversification of risk was drummed into me over forty years ago and remains a cardinal rule for how I organize my life. Needless to say ymmv.

Thank God I don't have this problem. I left in the will once I'm dead, I'm to be stuffed with all my remaining tobacco and burnt in either Buddhist tradition or heavy drinking orgy.

I sold a lot of aged tobacco when I quit. I kept waiting for the right occasion. While it may be that it would have come, quitting came first.
