Last night I opened this tin of Gladora Pesse Canoe Oriental Flake. It came in a recent SP order that included several SG tins. Upon opening the parcel I got a strong whiff of fruity floralness and remembered from someone else's review of this tobacco that the tins of this particular manufacturer aren't sealed in any meaningful way, so I knew I had to open it up. That, and the photo another member shared of the horrendously moldy contents of his tin of this same product; I had to see if this would be okay - couldn't risk socking it away for a later disappointment. Plus, it smelled VERY interesting. Thankfully when I opened it, all was well.
Others have described the odor of this product as fake or artificial, but it doesn't strike me in that way. Instead it reminds me of some sort of generic old fashioned cooked fruit flavoring, maybe like snow cone syrup or Turkish delight, and also with a very sweet nutty smell like marzipan or nougat. Also, Astropop. Whatever the toppings are, they're quite potent.
Strangely, most of that doesn't translate into the taste. Instead, I get a rich, sweet buttery flavor that sort of blankets the tobacco. Definitely some perfume overtones from the Orientals but also some sandalwood, stewed apricot, and maybe a little sweet mint.
I don't know - it's just very interesting, and I like it quite a bit. The presentation is very nice. Hinged metal box that snaps shut tightly, with nice artwork on the decals. Gold cardboard cut to tightly cradle the eight flakes, closed with a fancy little sticker. The flakes themselves are thick and large, fairly moist and pliable, but they rub out easily. They remind me of Gawith flakes, only not as stiff or dense. Rubbed out, it crumbles nicely and packs well. Dried out a bit, it behaves very nicely on the burn.
I'm happy I bought this, and will certainly buy more. It's rich, somewhat aromatic, and quite different from other blends. I think anyone who appreciates Lakeland tobaccos would like this as well.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this blend. I have one on the way to try as well. Quite curious.

Tried this just this morning. Promising. Smells great, but my taste buds are a bit off due to current treatment. I'm looking forward to giving this a proper trial in a few different pipes in the days/weeks to come. Thinking it may be repeatable. How'd you like it?
I really enjoyed my first small bowl of it (in a clay). I haven't smoked a "straight" Virginia in a long time, and this reminded of how good they can be. It's got a tad of sweetness to it, which is to be expected from a Danish style tobacco. I imagine it will age quite well.

On a positive note, i decided to do a side-by-side comparison between 3 of the OJK offerings, since the only one i've ever had is the original and mostly smoked that early on.

So, 3 tins freshly popped as of last night:

Will get to "work" on tasting all 3 of these back to back either tonight after it cools down a bit, or tomorrow when i have more time. Either way, i can tell by just the nose on these they are quite different blends entirely.

Quite interested in your report.

Well, popped my Pesse Canoe Oriental not-so-fresh from SP last night. No go. Doesn't exactly look like the one @Puff nstuff just showed, to say the least.

Wow, that looks terrible!
Sorry you got a bad one - I was looking forward to your impression of it. That's at least the second tin someone has opened in similarly poor condition. Gladora needs better quality control, and a better seal on those tins!
Making me think twice about stocking up on any now...

Yeah, if i liked it enough to stock up, i'd definitely pull the flakes, dry them a bit and jar it up. Might order another before i leave if i have a few more from this batch of to-try stuff that i want to stock up on.

For me, this tobacco was a huge letdown.
A friend of mine locally bought a tin at a B&M and it had mold, though I haven’t seen that mentioned as an issue anywhere.
