Today I opened one that I haven't smoked in many years. Over a decade, for sure. It is a tin of Rattray's Black Virginia from 2004. The tobacco is black and it smells like plump, sweet raisins. I'm surprised it shows no trace of sugar cristals. I don't remember how it tasted fresh, but this one is nice and sweet and a pleasure to smoke. I'm glad I have a few more tins of this left.

Opened up an 8oz tin of GLPease Fillmore. Just shy of 5 years. I have about 4 more at this age and another from 2020.
It's by far my favorite Va/Per and probably tobacco of all time. Having said that, it's been about a year since I've had it, which really doesn't justify the former. However, I wanted to wait until about 5 years to see what age did to it.IMG_7768(1).jpgIMG_7770(1).jpgIMG_7771(1).jpg

I meant to post this here last week.

Just opened a 10 year old tin of Skiff Mixture. The tin note makes me envision an old wood paneled library with high backed leather chairs clustered around a fireplace.

After breathing for a few days the Orientals have become slightly more prominent. A very civilized smoke.
Aged for 10 years, my respects

I took a gamble on this one and bought sleeve of it off a fella on Tinbids. Shipped immediately and arrived in beautiful condition. The tins certainly look pristine...

I think I still smell some dark fired and a trace of something animalic. Maybe long dead ghosts of the civet extract or musk ketones in the topping.

Judging by the weights of the other four tins they're sure to be the same when opened up. I took the risk of buying these, but I don't think I'll take the risk of smoking them.

If anyone is a 90s tin collector or something and wants the four others, PM me and I'll be happy to send them on.

Always tasted bland, like steam no matter how much I dried it or how I rubbed it out. Maybe I had a bad tin idk.

That was my experience yesterday, the first time I tried it: mostly lightly-flavored hot air, with about 5 minutes of flavor in mid-bowl, and a little more when I relit. There was some improvement when I used a pipe tool to split up the flake, but that was short-lived. When it turned back to bland and showed no sign of improving, I gave up on it with about a quarter of the bowl left, and then tried the Reserve du Patron, which was much better.

Like an abused spouse, I blame myself: I'm new to the blend, need to learn how to smoke it correctly, didn't prepare it properly, didn't use the right kind of pipe, smoked it too quickly, expected too much. At least I don't have visible bruises. I'll leave it in the jar until spring, and then try it again: I have no desire to hurry back in the immediate future. Meanwhile, I have some Hal O' the Wynd on the way, and will see how that compares.

Don't think I've tried Marlin flake yet, but sometimes when I have the experience you describe, I need to leave it for quite a while and let it dry significantly. And then try different pipes and cadence. Not always the solution but sometimes......

After yesterday's experience with the big, rich flavors of Reserve du Patron, which is dry almost to the point of crumbly, I think I'll leave Marlin Flake out in the open to dry for a year or two ;)

So odd. I've only tried it once but to me, Marlin Flake tastes of caramel and I never let tobacco dry before trying it, nor do I rub flakes out.
