I finally finished a month-long project involving Three Nuns, Newminster 403 Superior Round Slice, perique, Virginia and burley blends as well as a rum-based topping. The beginning version is well known to most:

The finished version is below. I would consider the Two Nuns version a non-aromatic, but it’s a lot sweeter and a bit more flavorful than the original.

Yesterday I opened a brick of my first Tabac Manil Semois: Le Petit Robin.

The gold foil paper is pretty thick, but not airtight

Opened up, it reminded me of peat moss

Dry, but not crumbly

The shag cut is very fine

The smell is earthy and pleasant. I packed some (tightly) into an MM mini, and it burned quickly. The aroma and flavor were very pleasant, very tasty. I’m looking forward to more of this one.

Tabac Manil is incredible stuff! Discovered it this summer. If smoked very slowly, Le Petit Robin has a natural sweetness that reminds me of the sweetness found in a good Virginia, except with a clean burley taste. That stuff is just heavenly, immediately went into my rotation.

I tried some this afternoon, and it's quite good. I packed it tightly, but it still burned more quickly than I expected. Sometimes it left an interesting tingle on the tongue and palate; other times it was sweet and toasty. I'm looking forward to more! I'll have to try some of the other Tabac Manil blends too.

I thought Le Petit Robin was mostly Virginia with a bit of Semois as a condiment (although I've never smoked it). When I was in Belgium they had a shag cut in a red packet, but it was called something different (and I only bought the Green and Brown packets - both pure Semois but different cuts).

I can sense the rich sweet molasses aroma just from your photo. So many others have difficulty smoking and enjoying this blend. Not me. I love the stuff. The presentation. The coins. It’s wonderful.
Man I really wanted to like this one but it nailed my taste buds with a weird sour metallic taste. The positive reviews make it sound wonderful, unfortunately it’s not for me. Bought some Stockton hoping it’s in the same realm and something I’ll like.

2007 McClelland Classic Samsun

Tobacco was in perfect condition. These coated tins are really some of the best vessels in terms of hyper-aging, imo. Tin note was spiced figs, prunes, wine reduction, and a bit of the classic McClelland smell. Smoke was creamy and complex. It's crazy how burley-like this blend is. I was getting loads of nuttiness with fleeting cardamom, licorice, and spices that require more meditation to identify. Retrohale flavors are amazing, adding another layer of flavors and textures. I need to spend some time with this one. There is a lot to be discovered here. This is my first Turkish Samsun and I am an instant fan.

Ack! Shame. It goes that way often enough. Sometimes, Person A, like Pipestud, loves a blend, like, Royal Yacht! While Person B, say Eulenburg, writes that it tastes like gangrenous horsemeat. Anyway, hope your Stockton is a consolation. Cheers!

Exactly. I didn’t care for Royal Yacht but I could see how others would enjoy it. That’s the beauty of our hobby, the amount of choices we have

With Fall weather means back to latakia! Opened up a tin of 2022 Squadron Leader. First time with this blend. Tin note is a wonderful smoky aroma (but not too much) along with some hay and cherry notes. Moisture level is perfect. I then smoked it this morning. Great flavors with citrus, creamy/buttery, cedar, and smoky latakia. IMG_5092.jpegIMG_5093.jpegIMG_5093.jpegIMG_5095.jpegIMG_5094.jpeg
