The tin note was like a booze soaked apricot or an overripe apricot that was about to fully spoil. The flakes were really wet, probably the wettest c&d tin I have encountered. I definitely wasn't expecting this when I opened it.

I have left the flakes in the tin to dry out a bit as per my usual routine. I have left the lid off for a few hours at a time and it is drying out well. The initial boozy, fruity aromas are fading but they are there if you really stick your nose in the tin.

I am 2 smokes in. One rubbed out and one folded and stuffed. I noticed the boozy aroma in the taste of both smokes but way more in the first smoke. Despite drying the flakes out pre smoke, this blend bites me like none other. I smoke a lot of red Virginia, burley, perique and a lot of c&d but this is by far the most bitey blend I have ever smoked.

I will have another bowl tomorrow then probably leave it for a week or two. if that doesn't help, I will jar it for a few months.

I know this sounds negative, but it's not intended that way. I've been smoking various blends long enough to know that it may just need time.

Funny, I smoked a sister tin (same shop, same mfg. date) last year and found it unimpressive. This stuff is excellent.

Just opened a tin of Peterson Christmas Blend 2017.

The bumpf:
Peterson 2017 Christmas Blend is blended using a carefully balanced mixture of ready rubbed Virginia and burley leaves with an addition of broken flake for a smooth and cool smoke. The blend is top dressed with flavors of wild berries, vanilla and a touch of amaretto.

I really enjoyed it at the time so got a few tins for the cellar. Really wish Peterson still made their Summer, Christmas and Blend of The Year tobaccos. The embossed tin is lovely, as well.
These were never airtight tins so I mylar’d them as soon as I got them. A wonderful smell filled the air as soon as I cut the Mylar bag open.
Gonna smoke it in my 2017 Peterson Christmas pipe.

So this one had a dent in it so i jarred it. I have no experience with this type of tin. My first one. But the seal seemed fine.

The pipes magazine podcast has a discussion of just that in the past couple of weeks. Brian opined that they’re the least reliable for long term storage.
I’ve got no personal experience with them, but I know I’ve got paint that’s really old and not dried up

Curious if somehow residual paint on and around the opening and lid make for a more airtight seal than one might find in this design used for tobacco storage.

2009 Mac Baren Latakia Blend Roll Cake. Forum deal. There was fear the seal had gone bad. Hard to tell, there was a tiny hiss. The rolls are dry but not crisp and there is that nice spongy feeling when squeezed, Very mild tin note. This is the Syrian Latakia mix. I'll report back this weekend. I am going to give it about a 24 hour jar nap.

Decided to open a tin of Bayou Morning Flake from 2022. The smell is fantastic but the “flakes” are some of the dryest I've seen from a tin since i picked up pipe smoking more seriously back in 2021. Im smoking a bowl of it right now and it isn't bad.

For me they're hit or miss but tge ones that hit, have a spot in my celler. Night Train, Briar Fox, Yorktown, and Three Friars are my jam. GLP is amazing across the board with Barbary Coast being the only blend i haven't cared for

Cracking a jar of bulk 1792 from 2019. This is from when I very first started cellaring. I bought quite a few different Gawith Hoggarth and Sam Gawith 250 gram boxes and jarred them and stashed them. This will be my first time trying it.. I do somewhat wish I had smoked some fresh to be able to compare… curse my patience!

If it's been undisturbed in that jar then the topping shouldn't have diminished much, or at all. Quite possible it's even had the opposite effect.
