I love, love, love the wide open draw on cobs (with the filter removed).

I want to find a briar with with a similarly open draw. Are there any briar brands that are especially known for having a more open draw?

Naturally, I thought of just getting a filtered briar and removing it; like I did with the cobs. But a couple of threads on here say that doing so could lead to an... explosion (?!). Why is this the case with briars, but cobs are immune? Or are they?!

That's it, alright. I'd already have a filterless Dr. Grabow in my hand were it not for having seen this pic before...

How come this doesn't happen with cobs?
Cobs are more permeable so there is less risk of buildup. It’s one reason why I only have ebonite stems on my filterless briars too, it cracks rather than shatters like lucite. Took me a whole evening removing small shards of acrylic from my gums once

"explosion"! What nonsense. A filter, or in the case of the balsa insert, an absorber if you will, is sometimes a good idea with a moist blend such as some aromatics. With naturals or English blends a high quality briar should absorb what moisture there is. If it doesn't you might have the blend too moist. And finally, those pipes with a "well" in the bottom... I've always considered that a selling gimmick more than a real asset. If there is so much juice that it needs to run down in a hole, then the tobacco is way too wet. puffy
