Oh, really?

Oops that's twice in short order my sense of humour has been misplaced with you in my short tenure here. As a sound bite your comment I quoted struck my funny bone. Sorry
I hope it doesn't result in any sanctions because the welcome has been great but I'd understand if you think I'm not suited to the forum and wished to report my comment ??

It's partly my fault for assuming that the Cap'n was widely known; I forgot the fact that some readers of these threads are new members. From what I can see, no harm done. Don't let that chase you away from the forums.

Your comments were funny, and Duane has pretty thick skin and good sense of humor (just don't follow him).

And I'm pretty sure there are only a handful of people here who are really suited to the forum (but I'm not sure I could tell you who they are).

Well this thread went, um, where it went.

Back to the OP:

To charring light or not to charring light, that is the question?

Eh, if it takes on the first light I see no good reason to let it go out. On the other hand, if it takes another seven lights, so be it. Dry it more or rub it out more next time and call the extra lights "re-lights".

For what it's worth, I've had far more trouble with plugs and slices than I have wet ribbons.

but them some guy on youtube insists that you should have smoke bellowing from the pipe at first, to ensure it stays lit...
The proper term is imbecile, not "guy".

Sometimes I do a charring light, mostly I don't. Depends on the cut and what I've done to it before packing. As almost all of the blends I smoke are smoked very well dried before packing, combustion is not an issue. I take a few puffs at the beginning while lighting around the top and after that, just the occasional sip to savor the flavors of the smoke. Barely more than the merest curl of smoke. Keep that bowl simmering at the verge of going out to get the best flavors.

I fold and stuff flakes almost exclusively so the tobacco when first lit doesn't expand over the top of the bowl. Since there is nothing to tamp down, the first light is usually enough.

Now when I am at the end of a tin and I pack the pipe with pieces, I will use a charring then a true light when the tobacco expands over the top.

Over thinking something you're trying to enjoy is a sure way to suck out all the enjoyment. For the most part, I think there are 3 things that are important. Don't pack too tight. Make sure the tobacco is dry vs moist. Puff slow. The fourth requirement is to smoke and gain experience where those three things are mostly automatic.

the point of the char light is to help the bowl burn evenly. The more complex the mix is the more effect it seems to have. Or to put it another way char lights makes it easier to get a good light that will increase smoking pleasure, however it's not the only way.
Oh by the way almost forgot. About 1 out of three bowls I do with a single light and the single most important step in lighting is just pay attention to what you're doing.
