about 10 minutes ago I packed my bowl with nightcap using the three pinch method, which I am now currently enjoying...

I struck a match and did my char light and the pipe seemed to be well lit. It seemed to me to be well enough lit that all I would need was a few strong puffs and it would be good to go. Does any do this?
Would like to hear your thoughts and advice on this approach to lighting. Thank you.

PS, I didn't start puffing to keep it going. I rather slowed down on the puffing and used another match... but what if ????

Glad to hear this. I thought what I was attempting might be a sacrilege ha ha.

I am still new to pipe smoking and often run into the situation where my pipe is getting quite hot, I thought I could be lighting it too "well" at the start... but them some guy on youtube insists that you should have smoke bellowing from the pipe at first, to ensure it stays lit... idk, I don't mind a slow start and a relight if I can savour the tobacco more and keep the pipe cooler. Thanks.

I think the best advice to give beginners is how to avoid major catastrophes (using a blow torch type lighter, putting your pipe in the dishwasher, buying Clan tobacco (ha ha OJ I actually like it) etc, the real disaster moves).

Once these are covered emphasis should be put firstly on enjoyment, then experimentation and learning.

When I recently started smoking my Grandfather's meerschaum I inherited, my first few bowls went reasonably well... maybe the pipe was a little hot and I got just a little bite but...

After watching a lot of youtube I found I was suffering from information overload and constantly asking myself questions -
"Is it burning too hot?"
"Is it going out?"
"Am I damaging the pipe?"
"Should I do the breath method? speed up? slow down? Tamp now? Tamp softer? Stop drooling?"
Haha you get the idea...

Turned out to be more stressful than relaxing... I like the whatever works approach and take it from there.

I was dubious when I first discovered the char light concept after I'd been smoking a few years. Then I decided it was not a bad approach especially for new pipe smokers. Even for experienced smokers, not every bowl is packed just right and sometimes they settle with a first light and develop a good ember with the second. With irregular size cuts it can take a third light to get going. However, for an experienced pipe smoker who knows the pipe, the blend, and the packing drill for that blend and cut, the first light usually does it. If the char light routine gives new pipe smokers a little more confidence, that is a good thing. I think gentle tamping after a char light is often the key.
